🀷 Wikipedia saith turnout for the 2001 primary was "one of the lowest in the city's history" at 22%.

DC doesn't do odd-year elex, but in 2000 turnout was <9% for the presidential in May and 13.5% for the half-of-council primary in Sept. In '02, it was 34.5% for the Mayor/rest-of-Council primary….

...and Kwame Kilpatrick.

(although given his primary was literally on 9/11 maybe the 22% turnout is somewhat excusable....)

we were in about the same situation a year or so ago and got basically the B&D version of a Mr Coffee--i think it was $35 or so at Target?

we got the kind with the clock you can fill the night before and set to turn on automatically, but they also have ones with just an on/off switch.

depending on how you write your 8s, it's not _so_ terribly different--separate the two loops slightly and you're most of the way there.

DC resident here, reminding you that adult felonies in the District are already prosecuted by the federal Department of Justice, and that DC is one of only a few jurisdictions where a prosecutor can directly charge a minor as an adult without a court hearing.

Also, a reminder that repealing the Home Rule Act would result in the federal government assuming all government oversight over District affairs. It wouldn’t just be β€œcracking down” on crime. It’d mean trash pickup, filling potholes, local park maintenance, building permitting, etc.

Today in Ann Arbor we have the chance to support our beloved library by voting YES on proposals A&B. A bigger site will get us a better library and more housing, and finally put a desolate parking lot to good use. #a2council

The moral panic of the anglosphere over bus fare evasion and proof-of-payment is quite something.

Especially when you think that we do accept another mobility-related widespread PoP system: on-street parking, which is entirely charged via a proof-of-payment + inspector system.

also seems worth noting again that Harris alone is personally worth something on the order of $10 billion, and another three co-owners are together worth about $9 billion more. bsky.app/profile/benh...

(and, of course, near as I can tell, none of them live in or pay taxes to the District....)

Seems like it's worth noting that Harris and many of the same other partners also own the Philadelphia 76ers, who early this year abandoned plans for a new arena less than a month after it was approved by City Council.... www.inquirer.com/news/philade...

A Non-Partisan Model of Running for Office with Cristy Lynn in Ouray County, Colorado - electionline In this episode, hosts Eric Fey and Brianna Lennon speak with Cristy Lynn, the County Clerk and Recorder in Ouray County, Colorado. She and many of fellow county officials are politically unaffiliated...

I had never heard of old spaghetti factory until my grandmother sent me a gift card to one, ten years or so ago

The nearest one, it turns out, is (or at least was) in Southern Indiana…

Spent a good long while trying to figure out what to do with the card…I think eventually my dad bought it off me…

Duolingo translation exercise Dutch: De neushoorn heeft een hoorn en een staart. English: The rhinoceros has a horn and a tail.

Today I've learned that in Dutch (at least according to Duolingo), the word for 'rhinoceros' sounds almost exactly like "nose-horn" (evocative!), and also its 'staart' is actually its end (i.e., its tail).

Yes, but you have to pay actual people, give them benefits, etc.

And we're too scared of "communism" to adopt the other immediately obvious solution of universal basic income, universal public health care, etc…so we'll just make up aides we don't have to pay & don't get sick (never mind the bugs).

Yeah, that was kind of my point β€” I hope (wish?) someone has been tracking how much illegal dumping there is in the city of this material that can't just go in curbside pickup, and how that's changed as the special disposal events have gotten less frequent and harder to access.
