No exodus to state sector after VAT added to private school fees, say English councils Most say they have seen no impact on applications for year 7 places, despite warnings from those against policy

Despite all the doom-mongering and ululating from the private schools lobby, as well as their Conservative and Reform lackeys, there hasn’t been a massive exodus from private schools. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Word of the Day is one I keep posting at the end of the year, hoping its time will come.

‘Respair’, from the 16th century, is fresh hope, and a recovery from despair.

Here’s to a few drops of respair in 2025.

Labour’s must help disadvantaged children become ‘school ready’ before it’s too late | Editorial With child poverty forecast to rise by 400,000, Keir Starmer’s pledge to improve the life chances of early learners is a matter of the utmost urgency

100% this - child poverty has to be the target. So much else flows from this.

To Be Pacific

Why do you always go off on a tandem,
say goodbye without further adieu?
It’s time you climbed down from your pedal stool –
this is not a phrase you’re going through,

when antidotal evidence suggests
you’ve been freewheeling right from the start.
Or rather, from the gecko, as you might say.
You’re always upsetting the apple tart.

I can’t be asked to correct you these days:
it takes two to tangle, I won’t deny it.
But when push comes to shovel and all’s set and done,
I just want a little piece of quiet,

to curl myself up in the feeble position
so I can give my poor ears some rest bite
from these sayings which do not pass mustard,
the flaws in the ointment you cite.

You’re no escape goat or social leopard;
I don’t regard you as a hapless case.
But be aware there are reaper cushions
when you cut off your nose despite your face.
