When everyone decided covid was over, I stopped playing indoor shows with no mitigations, because my life is precarious enough. I also know more than a handful of people with long covid now, and it is unsettling how many people are completely silent about it.

The framing of me not gigging anymore as a "personal choice" bothers me - I have viral asthma that reliably flares when I'm sick. I lose breath control and can't sing. One of my earliest memories is of having to get the oxygen mask as a kid during some run-of-the-mill childhood virus.

Narrative of waiting to "be discovered" as an artist is a deadly one. I ingested the mythology as a young person, then spent periods of my life feeling like a doomed failure. It slowly cracked for me - the narrative is a poisonous fairy tale. It sells well & is ultimately misleading & disempowering.
