We must challenge the false narrative that fossil fuels are the cornerstone of economic prosperity.

Today’s geopolitical recession—less cooperation, more competition, and narrow national interests—only makes global challenges like the plastics treaty and climate goals harder to solve.

Public health risks, as toxic chemicals leach from plastic, especially in low-income communities near petrochemical plants.

The cost? Environmental chaos, with intensified climate change coupled with plastic pollution devastating ecosystems.

Instead of leading the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to sustainable solutions, this policy locks us into a fossil-fuel-dependent future.

Meanwhile, the U.S. plans to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, stepping away from its commitments to “slowly” address climate change.

This creates the conditions for massive overproduction of plastic—much of it single-use, destined to pollute our planet for centuries, or incinerated with toxic consequences.

Increased drilling doesn’t just mean more fuel; it also means a surge in cheap feedstocks for plastics, byproducts of oil refining and natural gas processing.

Beyond accelerating climate change, this policy threatens to flood the world with even more plastic pollution.

Here’s why: Plastic production is intrinsically tied to oil and gas extraction. Approximately 99% of plastics are derived from fossil fuels.
