I keep getting locked out of files I've uploaded to OneDrive because they are in use by me. Thankfully @simonxix has come to the rescue and given me a FLOSS workaround, for now at least. (One that I'm familiar with and works through a client and web version).

'Having' to use Microsoft tools is a massive burden. Not only are they poor (and pushing their LLM products and services everywhere), they also don't play very nicely for those that have chosen to not use proprietary operating systems.

Did you miss the LIS Research seminar on "Obstacles to Open Access publishing for researchers with weak institutional ties"?

If so, never fear, the recording is now out! I'd really recommend giving it a listen.

Wiki-to-print - creative crowd wiki

A wiki isn't a bad shout, and having just been to the ServPub event, it would be remiss to not shout out wiki-to-print (cc.vvvvvvaria.org/wiki/Wiki-to...) and wiki4print (wiki4print.servpub.net/index.php?ti...) in case you want to consider a more holistic approach to discourse and digital publishing

I am tempted to suggest a BBS; in ye olden days of RLC, we used Sandstorm, and that offered a few options. @simonxix.com might be able to offer contemporary alternatives. But what you have might be the right option for this -- I will just endlessly urge self/community-hosting and FLOSS.

FYI, I have started cutting the 5" single that will accompany the collaborative full length with @thegnarrator.bsky.social that *is* forthcoming, hopefully later in the month.

NEW: breach of Discord age verification data.

Including some users passports & DLs

Age verification is a badly implemented data grab wrapped in a moral panic.

Mark my words, as age verification mandates expand, we'll end up more surveilled and less secure. 1/

Diversity of infrastructures is essential, ultimately, for an earnestly bibliodiverse ecology.

Most of my concerns with things like Diamond Capacity Hubs is around centralisation. We need a broader range of interoperable publishing infrastructures for a healthy, community-led publishing ecosystem.

Home Office grants extra visas for UCL international students told to defer Hundreds of students with promised places had been left in limbo after university exceeded its visa allocations

UCL referring to "demand for places" here is acting like its some minor player that's hit the big-time. The honest answer is that it's deliberately over-recruited (and one can guess how it has done so...), because it can, at the cost of its smaller rivals www.theguardian.com/education/20...

πŸ“£ Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

You can read Recipes for Disaster, our compendium of direct action tactics, in both English and Portuguese:

This "anarchist cookbook" details an array of ways to make the world a better place. Get a print copy as an insurance policy in case something happens to the internet.

I *really* don't want to go down the perilous road of defining infrastructures, so take this with all the salt you need, but you don't have anything without infrastructure (in their many guises and applications).

Reading reports on OA from 10-15 years ago is an interesting albeit depressing enterprise of a Sunday afternoon. The pitfalls that were warned about have become part of the firmament that the contemporary scholarly publishing landscape is bogged within. (Of course there are many notable exceptions).
