So excited to see it out and honored to be part of this group!! Rare opportunity to learn about the real-world entanglements between policy and AI's pasts and futures. My special gratitute to @apasek.bsky.social and Kelly Bronson for their guidance.

Who Broke the Internet? | E4: Kick 'Em in the Dongle | The Making of Musk: Understood | CBC Podcasts | CBC Listen It's 2025. President Trump is back, and the richest men in tech are on stage with him. What started as a dysfunctional internet run by tech giants, and enabled by failed legislation, has morphed into ...

Yeah I'm all Cory Doctorow-pilled on that front. The alignment of Canadian IP tech considerations with American ones was seen as a necessary concession to avoid tariffs... which isn't quite the same calculus these days!

This series is great on that front: www.cbc.ca/listen/cbc-p...

Anyways, mean girls in a convertible meme: get in loser, we're doing strategic nationalism with an eye to labour and environmental harm reduction!

There's a lot of policy areas where underregulated models + data centres are damaging. Plus, in the context of the American AI arms race, competing to 'win' is a bad move. Regulation is a good thing for companies: it steers them to a greener niche where they can be usefully different.

This summer I got a bunch of smart academics together to think about anti-extractive Canadian AI futures. Our white paper, which parses good and bad AI policy directions for the federal government, is out now!

I love his writing and all, but sometimes I wonder if David Graeber would have offered a slightly different account of bureaucracy and organizational relations if he hadn't noped out of all his service work at his university...

AI slop of a scientific diagram. It features a cute white rat, with a cross-section of its abdomin, in which a huge phallic (or is it umbilical?) structure protrudes up and extends far past the height of the rat itself. Helpful labels on the image read "rat" "dissiced" "retat" "testtomcels" "dck" and "spermatocial stem cells"

I am going to talk to a bunch of lawyers at Yale about AI Trash. Yes, I will be showing them the bad AI slop picture of a scientific illustration of rat testicles (?).

Current plans: jazz night at a dyke bar, weird noise music by someone named Governor Vomit, reading a little magazine at McNally Jackson, + the Superfine show at the Met. I <3 NYC.

U.S. regions more exposed to AI saw faster emissions growth, more reliance on fossil fuels, and dirtier electricity generation.

A before and after photo of a bear called 901. She's bulked out! Elsewhere on the site "Her early adult life is marked by growth and loss. She readily achieves a level of fatness above that of many other bears... It is not uncommon for mother bears in Katmai to lose their entire litter given the risks faced by cubs. Yet past maternal experience is immensely valuable, which is why 901’s growing maturity and body size have her poised for success."

I'm making my environmental media class vote in Fat Bear week today with me.

Colossus 2: in Tennessee, Mississippi… or both?
Things get more confusing once factoring-in a Greater Memphis Chamber statement in May that no turbines would be sited in Memphis. They’re not lying.

Memphis and Tennessee have been getting a lot of pushback, so xAI’s genius move was to develop a Gigawatt-scale energy hub right across the border in Southaven, Mississippi. In mid-2025, the company acquired a former Duke Energy power plant in Southaven. Shortly after, Mississippi regulators granted xAI temporary approval to run gas turbines there for up to 12 months without a permit!

Mind-blowing post detailing how xAI is not only building a massive new fossil fuelled power station for the second data centre to power X's Grok, it is doing it across state lines to avoid regulation

Remind me again how it's all fine bc a single query is small...

A photo of a zoom recorder hooked into a really crude circuit built on a piece of cardboard. On/next to it as a lot of wires, alligator clips, a cookie sheet and piece of aluminum foil, a chunk of Galena, some blue razor blades, a safety pin, and a pencil stub. Copper wire is coiled around a toilet paper tubes in the corner
