in every job I’ve ever had I’ve been asked to adopt new/emerging tech, an experience I imagine is common to people around my age. I like trying out new things and figuring out how they work. I am not a Luddite. this shit sucks, everyone knows it sucks, and they’re forcing it down our throats anyway

there was overpromising and overinvesting in the late 90s that led to a dot com bubble bursting but it wasn’t an existential crisis for the internet because its utility was well established. the rhetoric around AI betrays that its pushers have no similar confidence in their snake oil

compare that to AI, where the ads are much more ambiguous about what you can/should do with it (sales/productivity are mentioned yet seldom is it demonstrated how it can help) while all the CEOs say “well it’s happening so get with the program, peons”

you would see ads that showed businesses getting online and increasing sales/productivity but the tone was always “look what you can do!” rather than “do it or else”. and it worked because the internet could actually do that

if you’re old enough to remember the advent of the internet as a consumer interface, think back to that time for a moment. then ask yourself: did the powers that be of that time have to threaten everyone they had to get with the program or be “left behind”? cuz in my memory they absolutely did not
