That WAS another point I was going to make! I quite like the trolley problem because it is so trivial and easy to outsmart or undermine. It’s the same reason I play games in easy mode :)

I would suggest that the trolley problem is working very well! It has us, two strangers in the internet engaged in critical debate of ethical exercises :)

Not engaging with it is fine, it’s meant for getting kids to discuss ethics it’s an introduction, not the pinnacle of ethical dilemmas! It’s not meant for moral musings, just a way to get kids discussing ethics amongst their class. :)

I prefer to reframe it: you have one healthy person, and five who will each die without a different organ transplant.

The question and answer before clear very quickly… Should we start harvesting innocent people for their organs?

The trolley problem gives you a highly unlikely situation that requires quick action, it you’re expected to then spend time thinking if and debating the solution. Thinking about the trolley problem abstracts it from reality.
