Zelenskyy stayed in Kyiv while Russia was bombing the city and sending in hit squads to kill him. J.D. Vance fled to an undisclosed location because some peaceful protesters yelled at him while he was on vacation. This is why I believe victory over these people is still possible.

What a sound! It's lush math-gaze which has some more conventional moments but never forgets to add or twist a little something for texture in those moments.
Quite the range too, it's loud and quiet, subtle and in your face.
Instant favourite, love that shoegaze still has so much to offer!

Hitohira - Tsukuru

Hitohira - Tsukuru ひとひら - ぀くる

Can’t fit much here so I’ll just describe track 5. Starts intimate and chill, but for some reason the snare has this hollow, echoey sound. We build up and through the groove comes a wailing of guitar like a siren blaring in a tunnel and at the end we’re smashed by a crushing wall of sound. Wow! 5 ✨

Sam Fender - People Watching

Sam Fender - People Watching

Alright stuff from Not-Springsteen here. A little up and down for me though, good start then got tired after track 5, then brought back in by the stand out track TV Dinner, then bored by the end again. Won’t listen to the whole thing again for sure as his voice fatigues me for some reason. 3 πŸ‘πŸ»

Richard Dawson - End of the Middle

Richard Dawson - End of the Middle

Still weird and wonderful, the idiosyncratic vocal performance still juuuuust edges on getting annoying at times but doesn’t. The stories told are all super relatable and the music is mellow (mostly) and pretty. Love it 4 πŸ₯°

Damon Locks - List of Demands

Damon Locks - List of Demands

Hadn’t heard Damon Locks before so wasn’t sure what I’d get. Turns out it’s basically poetry read over some jazz and kinda sparse hip-hop beats. I really like the words and there are some grooves here and there but for me it doesn’t have much replayability as music. Cool experience tho 3.5 😊

Maruja - TΓr na nΓ“g

Maruja - TΓr na nΓ“g

I hear this EP as one long piece and I think it works best that way; as a long, post-rock song which sounds fantastic as always from Maruja. So instead of saying tracks 2 and 3 are a wee bit understated, let’s think of them as just the middle. Tracks 1 and 4 do tear it up for real though. 4 πŸ₯°

Maribou State - Hallucinating Love

Maribou State - Hallucinating Love

Nothing blows me away but it did put me in a pretty good mood, it was very enjoyable to listen to. Sounds like it was a fun album to make. Not much more to say but I’ll probably throw it on some time if I want something nice and a little bit in the background.
3.5 😊

The Weeknd - Hurry Up Tomorrow

The Weeknd - Hurry Up Tomorrow

As a not enormous Weeknd fan I found this pretty good but too long for me. I’ve no problem with it being indulgent if it’s his last album and it’s an epic sendoff or whatever but not every song hit me so it got a little boring in parts. Obviously super well made and nice to listen to overall.
3.5 😊

Early Day Miners - Outside Lies Magic

Early Day Miners - Outside Lies Magic

Feeling a bit like an unnecessary comeback after a decade or so off? Unfortunately doesn’t do a whole lot for me now since it sounds so much like their albums from ~25 years ago. Still totally fine and nice though, with some lovely moments.

Squid - Cowards

Squid - Cowards

Pretty good all the way through but finishes real strong with the last 2 tracks! Already like Squid quite a lot but the vocal is my least favourite part. It’s sounding a little more like old Radiohead at times here which I am more fond of. Consistent band, and from Brighton too!

Benjamin Booker - Lower

Benjamin Booker - Lower

Booker’s unique voice divides me. It sounds either like a beautifully smooth but raspy whisper or like Nick Drake with a sore throat. There are moments where I just wish he’d give it a little more. Sonically fantastic, lyrically interesting, like it a lot - most of the time. Might be a grower. 3.5 😊

In Waves really grew on me last year becoming a favourite by the end. The Deluxe version adds bangers KILL DEM and LETS DO IT AGAIN, a quirky little thing feat. Erykah Badu telling U what’s what, dreamy and chill Do Something and somewhat indistinct It’s So Good. Worth listening to with these. 4 πŸ₯°

Woah! First great album of 2025 already! I can see this being on come the end of the year. Might be my first physical purchase too. Gorgeous, groovy, playful but also with a dark side. Kinda reminds me of that BANKS album with Goddess on it, but if it was futuristic and honestly way better. 4.5 ❀️‍πŸ”₯

The Bad Fire is pretty good. Mogwai has changed a lot and gotten softer and more accessible. Probably for the best at this stage of their career, their music is still very engaging and sounds polished if not as challenging as it once did. 3.5 😊

Final list as I can't listen to any more and count it as 2024 any more. Didn't get to Kamasi Washington, Knocked Loose, The Cure, Parannoul, Denzel Curry, beabadoobee, Nick Cave, Geordie Greep but they may have been on here too πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Jack White, No Name. A little top heavy but the bangers come non-stop in the first half. Exciting to hear what sounds like new White Stripes but I can definitely see myself quitting halfway through on future replays.

I have to mention my favourite album of the year, and only home run 5 star I've heard. So annoyed to agree with RYM's top album, I went into this biased against it because I'm a hipster wanker I guess. But it's undeniable, it is magnificent. Something special I'll be listening to for years.
