The orcas flat refused. They wore their salmon hats and laughed at the decree. They were big and beautiful and free.

For awhile.

"Mammals Walk" had entire tables of species impacted. Some adjusted. The beavers made it. At first their feet bled, then calloused. Sometimes they missed the buoyancy of the water so much. The flying squirrels learned to make due on the ground.

"Birds Fly" showed the bats, the delicate skin of their wings carefully removed, the long fingerbones left. The kiwi birds were never directly part of the decree but children always chanted "Birds Fly" while pelting them back into the underbrush with stones.

Under "Fish Swim" was testimony from the otter family on the hunger they felt for oysters. Photos showed the piles of manatee bodies, piled up on the sandy Florida beach.

The penguins still dove 1500 feet below the surface to gather pebbles for their love.

It was later, much later, that the grotesque enforcement was documented. Each section starting with two words.

When the royal decree was issued it felt obviously simple to most citizens.

Fish Swim. Birds Fly. Mammals Walk.

And the position, posted on parchment, didn't change anything.

The bats still swooped after mosquitos over the dusky baseball diamond.

The kids and I have been doing this "Kids Recipe a Day" book. The kids and I made Walking Shrimp Fajitas (I'm not sure that those words have ever been said before) for lunch with enough leftovers for dinner. And nobody seemed to notice that the lesson plan was full shrimp fajitas.
