Slide thanking the protein databank and all the researchers who contributed structures.
At #bps2026 : I loved the special acknowledgement of the @rcsbpdb.bsky.social and the MANY researchers who generated the experimental macromolecular structures that made it possible to build AI models for structure prediction.

Visualisation of the structure of PhotoSystem II supercomplex from an algae that is accustomed to low-light conditions (Chlamydomonas reihardtii). It has six yellow antennae complexes which gather light for photosynthesis.
Day 15 of making proteins for #ArtAdventCalendar
The PhotoSystem II supercomplex in plants contains light-gathering antenna complexes (yellow). More antennas means better photosynthesis in low-light conditions (like the version shown with SIX antennas).

Visualisation of the structure of the Arc protein, shown as an icosahedral capsid (protein structure depicted as a ribbon), with a point light at its centre, throwing out shadow rays into the surrounding space.
Day 2 of #ArtAdventCalendar
Today's new protein is Arc, a protein found in the brain, which can form icosahedral capsids (like viruses) containing its Arc mRNA cargo. They are linked to regulation of synaptic plasticity and forming long-term memories.

I _really love_ the resulting aesthetics on this. I've played around with motion blur on structures before but this approach of many more frames & using alpha is a much nicer final look

Proteins are dynamic structures, but structural biology often shows them as static snapshots. Inspired by long-exposure photography and generative art, I built ProteinCHAOS, an artistic tool inspired by molecular dynamics to capture protein flexibility over time, much like long-exposure images.

Toolbox for molecular animations in Blender, powered by Geometry Nodes. - BradyAJohnston/MolecularNodes
A few years ago I was tinkering around in Blender, trying to figure out better ways to import molecular data for nicer visuals. I eventually and came up with an add-on that I released 100% free and open source: github.com/BradyAJohnst...
