I renovated the Lincoln Bathroom in the White House. It was renovated in the 1940s in an art deco green tile style, which was totally inappropriate for the Lincoln Era. I did it in black and white polished Statuary marble. This was very appropriate for the time of Abraham Lincoln and, in fact, could be the marble that was originally there!

I had a blast interviewing John Patrick Higgins (@johnnymuggins.bsky.social) for @wirobooks.bsky.social about his wickedly funny bad-back memoir, SPINE. Got to talk about Psycho, the "girl on the rock," and whether humor is a form of mental illness.

Dana Barnes (@dbaredit.bsky.social)'s vivid account of caring for her dying father is told with honesty, humor, and affection. Terrific long-form narrative essay -- poignant, memorable and very readable.

It was an honor to be an early reader of this beautifully written personal essay, Dana! There are so many terrific moments, and your loving characterization of your father is memorable and poignant. I suspect a lot of people caring for their elderly parents will deeply identify with this work.

Well, as you might imagine, I've been thinking about manholes quite a bit lately. (Hmm, that didn't come out quite as I intended.) I don't have any photos to share, but now that I know about that hashtag, I'll keep my eyes open.
