Two weeks ago, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushed our forecast to a peak of Β£1,777. Since then, wholesale prices have dropped and, coupled with adjustments to non-wholesale costs, have nudged the forecast downward. But the cap is still hundreds of pounds higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Lower wholesale prices - helped by factors like US tariffs, mild weather, and potential shifts in EU gas policy - have driven the summer fall. But the UKβs reliance on energy imports means global events could send Octoberβs cap up or down fast.

Looking ahead, weβre currently forecasting another small fall in October, followed by a further drop in January 2026. But the outlook remains uncertain, with global factors, from US trade policy and EU gas rules to geopolitical tensions and weather, all potentially impacting future bills.

Thereβs been a slight increase since our last forecast, driven by rising wholesale market prices and updates to policy, network and other costs. Weβve also assumed Ofgem will keep its transitional debt-related cost adjustment of around Β£28 in place until the end of September.
