Another small decrease is forecast in January, but a volatile market and changes to the non-wholesale costs mean forecasts remain subject to change.

Breakdown of October 2025 forecasts:
Standing Charge (£/day): Elec-0.51, Gas-0.30
Unit Costs (p/kWh): Elec-26.17, Gas-6.02

Two weeks ago, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushed our forecast to a peak of £1,777. Since then, wholesale prices have dropped and, coupled with adjustments to non-wholesale costs, have nudged the forecast downward. But the cap is still hundreds of pounds higher than pre-pandemic levels.

As the July price cap falls, we have released updated predictions for Oct – Dec 2025, with the cap expected to drop slightly to £1,698 a year for a typical dual fuel household. £22 lower than July, and 1% down.

Plus, @ofgem.bsky.social are due to make several policy decisions prior to the winter cap being announced, which could impact household bills.

Lower wholesale prices - helped by factors like US tariffs, mild weather, and potential shifts in EU gas policy - have driven the summer fall. But the UK’s reliance on energy imports means global events could send October’s cap up or down fast.

Our forecasts point to little overall change in the October cap, with a current prediction of £1,727, a year for an average household. However, there is still a way to go.

Looking ahead, we’re currently forecasting another small fall in October, followed by a further drop in January 2026. But the outlook remains uncertain, with global factors, from US trade policy and EU gas rules to geopolitical tensions and weather, all potentially impacting future bills.

There’s been a slight increase since our last forecast, driven by rising wholesale market prices and updates to policy, network and other costs. We’ve also assumed Ofgem will keep its transitional debt-related cost adjustment of around £28 in place until the end of September.
