University budgets are getting ugly. If you still have funds, you can minimize disruption for junior scholars in affected states by inviting them to give a talk or a visit and *covering their costs!* We can fold our academic wings around our junior colleagues. Let’s not fail them.

A black plaque with a silver face, inscribed “faculty leadership award.” It is standing behind a tiny crocheted broccoli, because why not?

Thank you, colleagues. We had a great year together!

I'm not sure about tariffs being unforeseeable when Trump ran on imposing them. Not believing him probably isn't going to be enough.

AI decodes the calls of the wild Artificial intelligence could reveal how animals of the land, sea and sky talk to others of their species.

We know that elephants and dolphins have names for themselves and others (as discussed in www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0316...). The new hope of a growing number of biologists and computer scientists is that applying AI to animal sounds might reveal what these creatures are saying to each other!

We do not come to treat with Sauron, faithless and accursed. Tell your master this: the armies of Mordor must disband. He is to depart these lands, never to return.

The best Saturday nights are the ones where I fall asleep next to my little boy after story time and wake up at midnight all snuggled together. He won’t be little forever, and I am going to miss these moments. 💕

The news story about that Chinese crypto guy eating the art banana is exam fodder for sure. It’s my favorite art blurb since the one about the guy who drew money and paid for things with it. What a peach :-) #taxprof #contractsprof #bananas

PSA: if you bought a frozen turkey for Thanksgiving, put it in your fridge to thaw today! (Unless your family are all buzzards. In that case, just set it on the lawn.) 🦃 #thanksgiving #saynotorawturkey

So excited at first because I thought this bit was about adjusted gross income. And it is, just in a more terrifying and interesting way than usual.

A word about DOGE: The Framers rejected the idea that the President would determine the structure of the executive branch. The creation of offices, boards, and DEPARTMENTS to implement law is the job of Congress. Journalists should call DOGE an “initiative” or a “project.” It’s not a department. YW.

They happen when a simple process repeats itself over and over again, like crystallization of water into a snowflake. If a section is amended through the creation of subsections, and then those subsections are amended, would it graph into spirals or palm fronds or something?
