Hail yeah! The ICECHIP field campaign (@nsficechip.bsky.social‬) has wrapped up, and the collected hailstones are being housed in the NSF NCAR Cold Lab for further study! 🌨️🔬 The project involved chasing storms from Montana to Texas to better understand the conditions that produce hail/hailstorms.

Today will be our “last dance” (officially) with severe hailstorms in North Dakota for the #ICECHIP effort. History was made as we collected, measured, and crushed over 10,000 hailstones across ~20 days. We are excited for the dataset that will be analyzed for many years to come!

During the 8-week @nsficechip.bsky.social project, #researchers used the latest technology to collect important #hail data. Hear from lead PI Rebecca Adams-Selin from Atmospheric and Environmental Research as she describes one of the more all-encompassing instruments – the SUMO.
