2/5 a book that steadily declined in quality over way too many chapters, finished off with a dull climax where the protagonist stands around doing nothing and an ending that resolves literally 0 plot threads (what little plot there was to be resolved)

almost done with this book and i have fully entered the “i hate elloren and this book” phase

elloren and yvan are actually perfect for each other because they are irritatiiiiiiiiiing

just once i would like for elloren to connect the dots on something herself without someone having to explain it to her

i miss him (lukas grey) but honestly all the men in this book are too good for elloren

she’s back in her Beautiful Silks for no other reason than elloren is a little dumb. look forward to 5 conversations with assorted side characters about this change, all of which are identical in the content

evil army beats their dragons: cheap lazy fantasy writing, makes very little sense
evil army tortures dragon babies to death in front of the dragons: so cartoonishly evil it loops around to being amazing

can the book take time out from endlessly rehashing the same three conversations and explain how someone in this world is supposed to “become lupine”

how many times must i endure the SAME conversation about clothes! if we had a plot instead of just slice of life scenes of wizard high school maybe we could cut a few of these conversations for brevity

i miss lukas, we haven’t seen him since pre-#wokeelloren but he and diana are the best characters in this book

i actually like the bit where elloren is reading a bunch of history books that’s a good moment

everyone is either a level 5 mage or completely powerless this power system is complete bullshit

i find the whole “the slaves rose up and became HORRIBLE GENOCIDAL OPPRESSORS” to be quite frankly stupid, the book has already said “the religion is a complete and total lie” why is the part of their history where they WERE slaves true

why is this book so slanderous of wool omg stop using it as shorthand for 'ugly peasant garb' (i dont care if its a common fantasy rope its DUMB)

the fact that there is no plot and the book is very slice of life honestly isn’t a problem for me, but i wouldn’t hate it if the book was less meandering and repetitive

i’m not MAD that elloren decided to #stopbeingracist after her brief dark afternoon of the soul (that she promptly abdicated responsibility for onto lukas “worlds best boyfriend” grey) but it IS funny that everyone else around her ALSO immediately stopped being racist at that exact moment

some reviews criticize how cartoonishly evil the High School Mean Girl Antagonist is, but when you have a protagonist with 0 redeeming qualities you need an opposing force of even greater evil

this white girl is EVIIIIIL

i’m finding elloren less and less charming as the book goes on, her mind is a prison from which there will be no escape from for several hundred more pages, joe abercrombie protagonists have more positive qualities

so far though the way the book is tackling patriarchy and especially the way women are agents of patriarchy is much more interesting and i’d much prefer more of that

i dont actually think the book is intentionally pulling a 'reverse racism is a terrible thing' i think the author is just white and white people often tackle racism in...poor taste
