Daylight saving time has started. Remember to change the batteries in all smoke alarms and test them to make sure they’re working. If you have carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, change the batteries and test them too. Only working alarms save lives.

Be careful when clearing heavy snow. Take your time and avoid overexertion. Take regular breaks and rest if needed.

- Keep decorations away from sprinklers and heat sources.

- Check your smoke alarms to make sure they work. Have one in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on each level of your home.

- Have an escape plan. Know two ways to leave every room in case of a fire.

Two children building a snowperson outside on a snowy day.

Please remind children not to play or climb on snowbanks along roads and sidewalks. Snowbanks can hide traffic and snow-clearing equipment, and collapse without warning. Crews are working hard to clear streets safely. Help us keep everyone safe by choosing play areas away from roads.

This New Year’s Eve, consider skipping backyard fireworks.

They’re unpredictable, pose a fire risk, and can cause distress to people and animals who are sensitive to loud noises.
