ASD's A European Industrial Strategy for Civil Aeronautics. Civil aeronautics is a vital enabler for Europe, not only connecting citizens and regions, but serving as the industrial lung of European sovereignty. It drives €109 billion in annual exports, and sustains the critical innovation, skills and manufacturing base that are essential for European defence and security. This industrial edge is also central to delivering Europe’s climate ambitions, with European manufacturers driving global efforts to decarbonise aviation.

Building on its world-class aircraft, engine, equipment, and air traffic management manufacturers, the European civil aeronautics industry remains one of the few high-tech sectors where Europe leads globally. This leadership cannot be taken for granted. Global competitors are investing aggressively, supply chains face unprecedented disruptions, industry is grappling with labour shortages, and time is pressing to deliver on the European aviation industry’s decarbonisation roadmap.

Meeting the EU’s climate-neutrality target for aviation by 2050 will require a radical transformation of technologies, infrastructure, and industrial capabilities. Massive and long-term private and public investment is required - together with strong and coordinated policy support - to deliver sustainable aviation while preserving Europe’s pioneering position.

With EU leaders discussing Europe's competitiveness this week, one of Europe's last globally leading high-tech industries is at stake: civil aeronautics. ASD has put forward a concrete roadmap for action. Europe cannot afford complacency. bit.ly/400rF8n

ASD President Micael Johansson formally hands over ASD's "A European Industrial Strategy for Civil Aeronautics" to Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas. Published by ASD on 2 December 2025, this strategic paper outlines a robust industrial framework designed to deliver the "fourth revolution" of sustainable aviation, emphasising the critical need for intensified innovation, resilient supply chains, and a harmonised regulatory environment. By leveraging the sector’s dual-use capabilities and advocating for unprecedented public-private investment, ASD presents a roadmap to secure strategic autonomy and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Does shaping EU aviation’s path to net‑zero — and coordinating industry interactions with the Commission, Parliament, Council and ICAO — sound like your next career step?

ASD is looking for a Senior Environment Manager to lead on environmental policy, coordinate common industry positions, and represent the association in high‑level dialogues with policymakers and stakeholders.

The role spans monitoring and analysing EU and international climate, energy and environmental initiatives impacting civil aviation and aeronautics — from EU ETS, STIP and the Green Deal to Sustainable Aviation Fuels and recycling — while supporting the Destination 2050 alliance for carbon‑neutral aviation.

It also means assessing implications for members, including where relevant defence and security, drafting responses to consultations and legislative files, and facilitating consensus across working groups, task forces, meetings and conferences.

Work at the heart of EU policymaking in Brussels with a collaborative, multicultural team, and a competitive package.

The European aviation sector issues an urgent call to accelerate policy action on Sustainable Aviation Fuels. The European aviation sector, represented by the Destination 2050 partners — @Airlines for Europe (A4E), @Airports Council International Europe (ACI EUROPE), @Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO Europe), and @European Regions Airline Association (ERA), together with fuel suppliers (Fuels Europe, Hydrogen Europe, Project SkyPower) and cargo and express delivery operators (European Cargo Alliance, European Express Association) — today issued an urgent call for accelerated policy support to unlock the full decarbonisation potential of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).

The joint call highlights the pressing challenges of affordable SAF deployment across Europe. The current SAF market remains nascent — HEFA-based fuels are the only commercially available option today and face a substantial cost gap compared to conventional kerosene.

The industry has laid out a 10-point action plan, designed to address early-mover disadvantages and catalyse the scale-up of SAF production and deployment. This call to action was handed over today to Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism during the Implementation Dialogue he convened to specifically address the ramp up of renewable and low‑carbon transport fuel production.
