Cal Budget Center weighs in on the House budget proposal:
βLast night, Congressional leaders worked through the night, not to support communities, but to advance harmful cuts that threaten the health and well-being of millions of people across the country." @chrishoene.bsky.social #CALeg #CABudget
And voted in the early a.m. after hiding their deliberations in the middle of the night. They might think we all were less likely to pay attention, but when people lose their health care, groceries, & other supports the only thing people will remember is HOW their Congress members voted, not WHEN.
22.05.2025 19:29 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This morning, every Republican representative from California voted Yes on the Houseβs budget reconciliation package.
Letβs be clear: they voted to take health care and food assistance away from millions of vulnerable Californians.

And these are just a few of our initial questions that we think legislative leaders should ask as they work to finalize a 2025-26 state budget.
What questions do you have?
Why is the Gov. prioritizing $400 million in tax breaks for film companies while he's cutting health care for Californians and...seriously...proposing nothing else on tax policy at a time when Congress is poised to give away $4+ trillion in tax breaks to high-income households and corporations?
17.05.2025 00:29 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Why do health and human services programs have to shoulder the brunt of the shortfall...with $5 billion in cuts?
Why is the administration using vague and undefined terminology to cut health care and other services for adults who are undocumented?
There are a lot of questions to ask about the Governor's proposal? For instance...
Why does it say there is a $12 billion shortfall when $4.5 billion of that is put aside in a discretionary reserve fund (meaning the real shortfall is $7.5 billion)?
JUST IN: Our First Look analysis of the @governor.ca.gov's 2025-26 May Revision.
Our take: The revised budget harms vulnerable Californians and misses opportunities to raise revenue and guard against federal threats. #CABudget

Visiting the ER for a broken leg could cost ~$21,328 if someone loses Medi-Cal and becomes uninsured. Thatβs almost 10 months of rent for a 2bdr apt in LA County. House Republican budget proposal would end #MediCal for millions & drive up the housing crisis. #FightForOurHealth
13.05.2025 16:49 β π 6 π 7 π¬ 0 π 0The upside-down & costly federal tax bill is currently being marked up in the House Ways & Means cmte. According to the Joint Cmte on Taxation, more than 40% of benefits would go to top 5%, and the top 1% alone would get 1/5 of all benefits. www.jct.gov/publications...

At least 13.7M people would lose health coverage under the House Republican agenda, driven by deep #Medicaid cuts & expiring #ACA premium tax credits. These changes would reverse recent coverage gains and increase the number of people without insurance across the country.
13.05.2025 21:24 β π 6 π 9 π¬ 0 π 0How would the $230 billion proposed federal cuts to SNAP impact California families? This graphic shows the groceries a family in Bakersfield would lose out on if their benefits were cut by 20%.
CalFresh helps millions of families and children and should be protected!! #SNAP #HandsOffSNAP
Other states are showing California how to protect its budget without cutting needed services.

House Republican Budget Takes Away Health Care, Food Aid to Pay for Expanded Tax Cuts for Wealthy
25.02.2025 22:05 β π 2 π 4 π¬ 0 π 0NEW: Republican-led budget cuts could strip millions of Californians of health coverage, food assistance, and other essential services.
Slashing federal funds threatens vital programs in every congressional district.

- Work requirements waste money on needless red tape instead of services.
- Coverage losses are not only harmful for people's health but they can also weaken state and local economies.
& as my colleague @adri-ramyam.bsky.social notes:
- Work requirements are cuts that lead to coverage loss.
- Most working age adults enrolled in Medicaid already work, while others front barriers due to disability or caregiving.
- Work requirements do not increase employment.
....
House Speaker & House Repub's say that Medicaid cuts are no big deal because those who would lose benefits are not meeting work requirements or are undocumented. In CA, those work requirements could mean 49-63% of people eligible for Medi-Cal would lose health care. www.cbpp.org/charts/peopl...

With House Republicans still negotiating a budget plan that is likely to include deeply harmful proposals, Senate Republicans today released a much narrower plan, which is both opaque and troubling.
