#Luxor is steeped in history. Known formerly as Thebes, it served as a former capital of #Egypt and is sometimes called the world's greatest "open-air museum", as it houses impressive sites like the Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings, and Hatsepshup Temple. #TravelingTuesdays

It was a thrill to sail down a part of the #NileRiver in #Egypt recently. The world’s longest river is also one of the world’s most important bodies of water since much of it flows through such an arid region. #TravelingTuesdays

The amazing and majestic #PyramidsofGiza in #Egypt, the last remaining of the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World still standing. Very thankful to have seen it!

Today we had the opportunity to visit the incredible temples of #AbuSimbel in #Egypt. They are true masterpieces, and ancient (and also modern) marvels to behold! #TravelingTuesdays

Though brief, we once had a chance to visit #Tangier. We ventured across the Strait of Gibraltar by ferry from Spain to visit this vibrant and captivating city for a day back in 2017. It was a nice introduction to #Morocco and we hope to see more of this Maghreb country someday! #TravelingTuesdays

#Colonia is arguably the most beautiful town in #Uruguay. Situated along the #RioDeLaPlata and inscribed as a #UNESCOWorldHeritage site, it is full of history and charm. Really thankful to have had the opportunity to visit! #TravelingTuesdays

#PuntaDelEste is a lovely seaside city in #Uruguay located where the #RioDeLaPlata opens up to the Atlantic Ocean. It has a number of cool sites like #LaMano - the hand in the sand sculpture, and #Casapueblo, the labyrinthian home (and now museum) of Carlos Paez Vilaro. #TravelingTuesdays

I first had the opportunity to visit #Uruguay for two weeks in 2006 as part of an amazing #FulbrightHaysFellowship educational experience, then returned with Chris in 2010. Truly a special place! #Porto is the second largest city in #Portugal. Situated along the Douro River, the city breathes history and is full of character. Its historic center has a well-deserved designation of being a #UNESCOWorldHeritageSite. #TravelingTuesdays

#Tavira is a lovely city in the #Algarve region of southern #Portugal. When we took this trip, Tavira wasn't on our original itinerary, but we had the good fortune of stopping here. The city dates back to the Bronze Age and has a distinct Moorish influence too. A true delight! #TravelingTuesdays

#Sintra is another beautiful and historic spot to be found within #Portugal. Located in relative close proximity to Lisbon, it is a designated as a #UNESCOWorldHeritage site for good reason. Situated along the mountains, it is enriched with palaces, gardens, and a refined charm. #TravelingTuesdays

Full of charm, hills!, history and character, #Lisbon was the first place in #Portugal we ever had the opportunity to visit. Portugal's largest city is fascinating and vibrant and we are thankful we had the chance to see it. #TravelingTuesdays

#Eswatini is a small, mountainous, picturesque country surrounded on 3 sides by South Africa. Still known as #Swaziland when we visited there in 2016, we were treated to some beautiful vistas and local cultural songs and dances during our time there. #TravelingTuesdays

We were fortunate enough to visit the island of #Lombok while in #Indonesia. It was equally beautiful and impressive as its more famous Balinese neighbor. We will remember the kind people here, along with our exciting ventures through terraced rice fields and #RinjaniNationalPark. #TravelingTuesdays

When we went to #Indonesia, we had the good fortune of visiting two of its beautiful islands, including the magnificent island of #Bali. We had heard so many positive things about Bali leading up to our visit, and we now know why it is considered such a special place! #TravelingTuesdays

Many moons ago (as you can see from these photos, it was still in the days of pre-digital photography 😉), I had a wonderful opportunity to visit the incredible country of #Japan, seeing #Miyajima, #Kyoto, #Hiroshima, #Osaka, & #Tokyo along the way. I hope someday to return! #TravelingTuesdays

#Mykonos is another magical place in #Greece. One of the Greek Cyclades islands, its name means "Island of the Winds". Among other things, it is home to charming windmills, winding streets, beautiful beaches, and magnificent sunsets. Its famous reputation is well-deserved! #TravelingTuesdays

For this week's #TravelingTuesdays installment, it's back to #Greece and to the magnificent island of #Santorini. The physical geography of this volcanic island is impressive, as is its cultural landscape and history, not to mention beautiful sunsets. A truly beautiful place in this world!
