the game has declared that i am on the Final Emperor kinda out of nowhere with a significant portion of the game still to go but fuck it we ball

the only one aside from Marathon that i have experience with was Hunt Showdown and, let me tell you, that is a game that realllly makes those paid dlc characters that come with their own gear instead of the dogshit default starter characters look real appealing when you're on a losing streak

extraction shooters are gambling. you "bet" your gear on the ability to get a bigger payout. as the season goes on, the gap between the winners and the losers widens such that the losers feel the need to reach for the microtransactions to compete. therefore it gets execs harder than diamond

i would genuinely probably get this if it was just a coop game where you and two friends are dropped into a map, have to scramble for usable loot, fight some npcs to get the thing you need, and then try to run before the cops get you. unfortunately it isn't that, it's a psychotic darwinist wet dream

the game is actually good when you go in with basically nothing and have to scramble around for useful equipment to get your little task done. rabbit and steel but for destiny. but the whole "gambling your items on each run" thing is how the game is actually meant to be played and it feels horrible

anyway my feelings on nuMarathon as a game is that the extraction shooter is a fundamentally antisocial piece of game design that exists largely to create misery for other human beings. i killed one person and was so filled with guilt about it that it made me want to uninstall it there and then

"extraction shooter" truly one of the worst genre names ever devised. generally speaking when you are coming up with one of those you should try to avoid coming up with one that sounds like you're describing opening fire in a public place

there’s no real solution for the fact that the app that lets me see my friends and feel less alone and hated is the same app that shows me all the horrors and evil of the world. but I’m really struggling with it today

ive only really played hunt showdown but each game of that had it's own thing that everyone was competing over (the bounties) but this feels much more passive in that everyone is kinda there for their own stuff that might cross over but also might not

with the competitive corporation angle and the stylisation, nuMarathon is honestly closer to a wipeOut spinoff than a Marathon sequel lol

marathon could really take it to the next level if they added single player and bespoke levels that you completed in an escalating series of challenges with a narrative contextualizing your play. they should invent a kind of game like that
