The diagram is based on a model presented in a previous paper and has been completely replotted. The surface is from a 30-m SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) digital elevation dataset, which has been plotted using the QGIS program. The digital elevation model data were sourced from the Geoscience Australia online data repository (ga.gov.au). The figure has been annotated to highlight processes and tectonic settings discussed in the paper. The colour slice is a thermal field from a convection model with impacts and volcanic transport and the surface is an Eoarchaean–Palaeoarchaean terrane (digital elevation model, East Pilbara terrane), shown for illustrative purposes only. Major surface disruption and subduction is induced by impact heating return flow. Mantle upwelling and background melting lead to extensive magmatism in the crust, including re-processing of fractionated ±ε142Nd reservoirs, where the anomaly ε 142Nd is derived from the measured 142Nd/144Nd ratio normalized to a notional bulk Earth ratio.
Long ago in the Hadean, when the Earth was young, its surface layer we inhabit (the crust) was formed. It might be that the formation of that initial crust was just part of planetary mass differentiation and stratification. 🧪⚒️ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Biplots comparing Tl data to carbonate sediment mineralogy and trace metal ratios commonly used for diagenetic screening. Darker blue horizontal line in the lower panels signifies the isotopic composition of modern seawater (ε205Tl = –6.0 ± 0.3‱), whereas the lighter blue horizontal line signifies the seawater value estimated for the Miocene (ε205Tl = –6.0 ± 1.0‱; Nielsen et al., 2009, Wang et al., 2024). (For interpretation of the references to colour in this figure legend, the reader is referred to the web version of this article.)
Thallium isotopes are an interesting proxy for ocean oxygenation, and it has an interesting partitioning mechanism related to Mn oxides. But it never got very popular.
For my personal preference, it's nice to see it works in carbonates... sort of. 🧪⚒️🌊

Worm-like creature with ‘dark secret’ wins New Zealand bug of the year award
Velvet worms have rows of pudgy legs, skin speckled like a galaxy and dissolve their prey with sticky goo
An ancient gummy-looking worm-like creature that hunts by projecting sticky goo from its head has been crowned New Zealand’s bug of the year. 🧪🐛
Peripatoides novaezealandiae, or Ngāokeoke in Te Reo Māori, have rows of pudgy legs & skin speckled like a galaxy.

On the Alps
A vast, monochrome world unfolds around you, snow stretching endlessly, broken only by the dark silhouettes of scattered rocks. No colors, no warmth, just the stark contrast of black and white. It feels like standing inside the static of an old TV, where reality fades into a silent, grayscale void.

line plot, each line shows one individual estimate of the ocean carbon sink from models or observation-based models. the black line shows the best estimate. Barplot at bottom right shows number of surface ocean CO2 observations.
The ocean takes up anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, 26% on average over the past decade.
The #GlobalCarbonBudget 2024 confirms that the ocean sink increased in 2023 after 3 years of stagnation due to rare triple La Niña event. 2023 was an El Niño year, with an expected increase in the sink.
