If you haven't yet checked out stream.place you should. I'm really excited about the future of video they are building for the open social web.
I canβt wait to get working on our collaborative library and share the liberating and collaborative nature of open source design facilitated via Penpot! πβοΈ
Come and join all the ambassadors Penpot Community Hours, 20th March at 3PM UTC.

Iβve long been a supporter of Penpot and design needs reliable and dedicated tools and teams that support the growing need for design in open source software and transparent and open source design as a practice.
Check out the announcement: community.penpot.app/t/penpot-amb...
Iβll be building community where I'm based here in the UK but also wherever my connections to open source software and design take me and my work.
@penpot.app have announced their ambassador program and Iβm excited and honoured to be part of the first cohort of ambassadors alongside some fantastic and inspiring folks. penpot.app/ambassador-p...

If your women in tech lists and shoutouts for international women's day are all white and cis gender women your list is not at all complete actually.
This week/weekend i've been reminding myself of the geek social fallacies plausiblydeniable.com/five-geek-so... and how they apply to the intended board game geek spaces but also how they might apply to OSS spaces too.

An image that sums up the journey of this particular week doing design work in OSS.
come and hang out tonight designers + OSS folks!
Morning.
So glad it was a useful reference! thank you for mentioning the talk :))))))))
ah! i'm so glad my diversity in design talk is still proving useful for folks β€οΈ I haven't made an updated version of that talk in such a long time and I feel like so much has changed about meangingful representation online. Would be fun to update it!
How do we create permacultured communities of people where the systems seem to favour those that take more and have community as a resource to be used for gains seem like the norm.
(Permaculture experts please excuse my crude definition, it's been 10+ years since i did my permaculture course)
And again, i feel a little like i did in this photo (I'm the person watering the garden on the right of the photo while everyone elses is gathered at the tables crafting together)
I felt a sense of immense responsibility and a big question i had was how does community become equitably sustainble?
Before i was involved in OSS, during my twenties i was deeply involved in local community volunteer action, running environmental projects, community gardens, after schoold clubs and asylum seeker rights to the point it removed any time i had to understand if i was rooted in the right place.
Combinations that may seem odd and unusual end up being nourishing and essential for survival. These plants don't insist that the other to grow taller, provide more shade, move their roots there's a balance and complimenting which i think in these cases, leads to less need for harmful interference.
I've been thinking about how I prune and weed my 'garden' lately. Garden in the hypothetical and existential terms.
In Permaculture, there are plants and crops that support each others survival and growth when you plant them together.
I wrote this Open Source Contribution guide 2 years ago, thanks to @erioldoesdesign.bsky.social we updated it to include a section on how you can contribute as designer to Open Source.
Eriol I appreciate your time and sharing your journey

My lovely friend @santoshyadav.dev included some of my words and thoughts on to his 'Contribute to open source - acomprehensive guide for everyone' resource with my experiences and tips on contributing as a designer to open source www.santoshyadav.dev/blog/contrib...
Happy to chat about this and the compounding difficulties of being a marginalised function (design) in FOSS which is especially hard when managing being a marginalised identity in FOSS too. Doing 'care work' or 'community resiliance' in FOSS is so so hard.

We do a lot of pretty 'invisible' work to advocate for design and designers in FOSS as well as many of us doing active paid and unpaid work as designers in FOSS.
huge thanks @gerwitz.com for tagging me & yes i totally agree re. more designers (and other non-code contributors) are needed in FOSS. I've been a core maintainer over at opensourcedesign.net/along with other lovely folks for 7+ years @jancborchardt.net @elio.bsky.social hachyderm.io/@simulo@hci....
free open source software needs fewer engineers and more designers and product people
We want to continue understanding how design and designers affect the OSS projects they get involved in but so far we're understanding in what ways design/designers can be measured and observed in OSS.
Find out more about the workshop here: teamup.com/event/show/i...
Myself and iamkingsleey.framer.website lead a session at chaoss.community/chaosscon-20...
We wanted to understand how the health of OSS and their communities are affected by design, usability and designers invovlement.
