Alice Wong taught us that disabled people don’t just leave memories behind—they leave infrastructure. Lineages of care. Methods of collectivity, survival. She named the connective tissue that holds our communities together, even across death, even across the losses that come too fast and too often.

Alice Wong, disability rights advocate and wordsmith, dies at 51 Alice Wong, a transformational leader for disability rights and justice, who founded the Disability Visibility project to magnify disabled culture, died Nov. 14.

A nice obituary for Alice, who was going to be recognized as one of The Post 50.

Invisible disabilities are only invisible because systemic ableism erases our access needs and quantifies who qualifies to be disabled based on capitalist and neuronormative standards of production.

The term "Individuals with diverse capacities" is an ableist euphemism and an erasure of the disability community.

Add another one to the "just say disability" list

Invisible disabilities aren’t invisible - they’ve been erased by ableism and ignorance towards the concept of neurodivergence.

A friendly reminder that 'neurodivergent' is a community-building term, and social justice matters with this term. We need to have more conversations about the disability community and who is privileged with social capital and who isn't, and why.

Increased rates of autism are due to testing, a broadened definition, and greater awareness. It's not vaccines. It's not Tylenol.

It's like his work never happened.

The “epidemic” of autism is the result of increased testing, broader definitions, and raised awareness.

The "textbookificaton" of disabled ppl (non disabled so-called "experts" teaching health professionals, educators, etc, about disability & disabled ppl) is how ableism stays centred in inclusive ed & health care. Anti-ableist pedagogy/practice means we are taught about disability by disabled ppl

Here’s a pro tip.

Don’t ask your disabled colleagues what their disability is. Even if they talk about how they’re disabled. It’s none of your business.

When we are speaking of disability research, finding ways of supporting disabled folks (in school, at work, etc), the lived experiences of disabled people MUST be central to what we call "evidence-based research". If not, it's just ableist (and usually props up eugenics).

My research will not retrace or undo the strides already made by disabled scholars & activists, particularly those who are racialized, queer, trans, & multiply marginalized, who have long illuminated the systemic nature of ableism. Read their work & stop asking me to prove ableism is systemic.

Unis need to understand how disabling tuition is, how inaccessibility isn't just about a lack of accessible academic spaces. It's also about how much people are charged to get an education. If a university's DEIA initiatives don't include how to make the institutions affordable, it's not true DEIA
