Every time I watch ALIEN I am transfixed thinking to myself "there's no way they've left themselves enough room to get the third horizontal line in that E without it looking like a squashed-in mess!" but no, every single time there it is, and it's beautiful. Most tense part of the movie tbh.

There’s a whole type of artist that hates anything supernatural/horror bc it gets too ‘on the nose’ and/or needs art to have no explicit stance on its messaging and I frankly don’t get that at all

Lots of great horror is loud drama with blood and monsters too

Horror doesn’t need to be elevated, and the schlocky monster has always been about capitalism or misogyny being evil

Horror has been getting quite the redemption arc as a genre in the past decade ish, but ppl are still very weird about it, sometimes saying particular horror movies are ‘better than horror’. Carpenter loved being a guy who made horror movies even with all the dunking and I think that’s beautiful

Probably never helped that carpenter is outspoken about how much he hates elitism in his field and capitalism, but that’s also why he rules lol

The only good advice I’ve heard from creatives at all levels is you gotta stay delusional about your craft and that’s the energy that will make things get made until the chance we do all get the bad ending

I know a lot is hard right now for artists and staring into the abyss of The Industries rn…. But also I keep the spark going by remembering there’s so much cool stuff being made in alt/indie spaces, and growing interest in supporting them as opposed to just Evil Corporations #1, 2, 3 … and so on
