Why we are letting them drive on the wrong side of the road, closing prime tourists sites, footpaths etc is a mystery to me.

I like this. One difference, which isnβt mentioned in the piece, is that the French village will have a (surprisingly powerful) mayor and council. Whereas we think it is a good idea to have feeble local government and a mayor representing all of central southern England.
