Critics of the social media ban love to point out that kids will find a workaround, as though that hasn’t always been the case with any age related restrictions.
A fair chunk of social media is more dangerous than sneaking into an MA 15+ film, but no one thinks we should do away with film ratings

‘Vast overreach’: police allowed to conduct warrantless pat-downs of people across inner Melbourne for six months Search powers, usually reserved for protests, will be in effect in the CBD and beyond in a move criticised by human rights groups

this is absolutely not ok.
And the police spokesperson dismissing genuine concerns with the old “If you aren’t carrying a weapon, you don’t have anything to worry about” shows how little they regard human rights. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

So these “rare earths” we’re gonna be digging out of Australia belong to all of us, right? Sounds like it might be lucrative. Wonder if there’s any taxation plan to benefit from our good fortune? Or does Gina keep it all?

Old Boilers with Genevieve Hegney and Catherine Moore Podcast Episode · The Saturday Quiz · 16/10/2025 · 43m

The publishing of my weekly podcast has been haphazard of late, and I apologise. But the good news is that you get last week’s episode today and you only have to wait 24hours for the next one! And they’re both crackers! podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/t...

My petty gripe: not only am I losing my livelihood to AI – now it’s stealing my em dashes too The humble em dash is being used as a tell that something is written by a large language model. But it’s James Shackell’s favourite piece of punctuation, and he’s not ready to lose it

This is exactly how i feel — I love my em dashes! www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

I’m more embarrassed for the subeditor - EVERYTHING from tennis racquets to golf balls? That range doesn’t seem that vast. Sound like they’re taking tennis balls and - at the most - golf clubs as well.

The Saturday Quiz is back this week (sorry for the unplanned hiatus) with a delightfully meandering episode. Whats the opposite of a lightning round? podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/t...

I maintain that a mnemonic has to be memorable - and yes, technically that has been “remembered” but only by rote. You could say the times tables is a mnemonic in that case. Rather than say, Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit… y’know?

Thanks Graham. Yeah, I wouldn’t want to do it that way every week either. It’s much more fun with other people!

Right, so the cops are dropping the charge that they weren’t authorised to use at the peaceful protest they shouldn’t have been at which they turned violent, resulting in serious injury and probable loss of sight. But we don’t need to worry about the right to protest

Audible unveils plans to use AI voices to narrate audiobooks Amazon brand will offer more than 100 artificial intelligence-generated voices in English and other languages

Stop using AI to create art. You’re destroying the planet to make what will only ever be slop www.theguardian.com/books/2025/may/13/audible-unveils-plans-to-use-ai-voices-to-narrate-audiobooks?CMP=share_btn_url

Audible’s AI will be nothing but slop. Translator Frank Wynne said “No one pretends to use AI for translation, audiobooks, or writing because they are better; the only excuse is that they are cheaper. Which is only true if you ignore the vast processing power even the simplest AI request requires.”
