This fluffball doesn't even know how many times I mentioned her at a party yesterday 😍

This is a welcome suggestion. However, it fails to take into account the curse binding the sector which means this phrase must be used at least once a week, otherwise the world will combust. Equally, we recognise that much more needs to be done.

The Gendered Battle Over Digital Sexual Abuse in South Korea Despite the country’s trailblazing laws, campaigners say more is needed to tackle the causes of a recent spate of pornographic deepfakes aiming to humiliate women and girls

“I realized that all of these abhorrent offenses were done by people I knew from my university class.”

In South Korea, a country with among the highest household internet availability in the world, deepfake sexual abuse has skyrocketed.

It remains to be seen if we’re as good at showing up to resist authoritarianism across the world as Koreans are! 9/9

Bolsonaro and Poland’s Law and Justice Party no longer hold power, and Yoon’s political future looks increasingly shaky. But authoritarian creep remains a global threat. And we know it’s tied to the rollback of women’s liberation. 8/9

In Brazil, we saw a similar dynamic: former president Bolsonaro sought to curb reproductive freedoms and undermine gender equality initiatives AS WELL AS weaken democratic institutions. 7/9

The activists helping Polish people access safe abortions With abortion effectively banned in Poland, campaigners are assisting people in crossing borders and ending unwanted pregnancies.

It’s no coincidence that rolling back women’s rights often aligns with authoritarian politics. In Poland, the Law and Justice party passed one of the world’s strictest abortion bans, while ALSO undermining judicial independence. I wrote about it for @huckmag.com: www.huckmag.com/article/the-... 6/9

Intimate Authoritarianism: The Ideology of Abuse For far too long have radical communities and their discourses treated domestic violence and abuse as external from the considerations of…

@butchanarchy.bsky.social writes about “intimate authoritarianism” – quoting gendered abuse as a tool to enforce control interpersonally, rooted in the same drive that fuels authoritarian politics. It preserves the status quo, granting men benefits like money, time, labor, sex, and power. 5/9

So what does this have to do with the martial law debacle? Authoritarian impulses that seek to undermine democracy often go hand in hand with patriarchal movements resisting women’s liberation. The two are deeply connected. 5/9

(It's worth saying that women's movements in South Korea are strong and feminists show up. And from yesterday's events it's clear Koreans are also more than ready to show up to protest authoritarianism too.) 4/9

... 80% of who believe themselves to be the primary victims of gender discrimination in South Korea, according to a 2019 survey.

That's despite strong evidence of women’s inequality in South Korea: the widest gender wage gap in the OECD, and growing digital sexual abuse, as I explored recently. 3/9

The Gendered Battle Over Digital Sexual Abuse in South Korea Despite the country’s trailblazing laws, campaigners say more is needed to tackle the causes of a recent spate of pornographic deepfakes aiming to humiliate women and girls

Yoon’s power grab was preceded by his attempts to rollback women’s rights and his weaponisation of anti-feminist backlash.

Journalists and activists I spoke to from South Korea for @newlinesmag.bsky.social say this helped him build support among young men...

South Korea just faced a huge political crisis: President Yoon tried but ultimately failed to impose martial law. This is the same president who ran on an anti-feminist platform. It’s an insight into the link between patriarchal politics and democratic erosion. Let’s unpack 🧵

In South Korea, pornographic deepfakes are endemic. Feminists have been raising the alarm, resulting in stricter laws against digital sexual abuse. But entrenched misogyny and traditional patriarchal attitudes persist, and girls and women continue to feel unsafe online. ⤵️

What happens when digital innovation isn’t paired with gender equality? My article for @newlinesmag.bsky.social explores the AI #deepfake abuse that targeted women and girls in #SouthKorea this summer.
