patlabor is way more likely as a series to deal with a union conflict over a contract as a plot or insurance premiums (for giant robots) than actual action and it's a really rare treat this way. also: way funnier than you'd expect.

mamoru oshii - director of patlabor (though better known for directing ghost in the shell) - is a huge influence on kojima and it shows. not in the over the top ends, but in the question of 'what should a force of state power do in peacetime?'. a lot about the banality of life.

it's a six episode OVA that's a prequel to the live action movies (which are also cool but not what i got exposed to as a kid). a real highlight of the "wait the sci-fi network is playing anime?" days back then. a breeze to watch with how short it is.

iria from zeiram the animation and alys brangwin from phantasy star iv definitely the formative 90s "fuckkkkk she's so COOL" experiences/influences for me
