i'm not sure if that would even be allowed vis a vis whatever thing i signed when writing for the site, but also, the site is completely defunct at this point and are they really gonna bother with a hobby zine?
so, go ahead!

patlabor is way more likely as a series to deal with a union conflict over a contract as a plot or insurance premiums (for giant robots) than actual action and it's a really rare treat this way. also: way funnier than you'd expect.
23.01.2026 16:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0mamoru oshii - director of patlabor (though better known for directing ghost in the shell) - is a huge influence on kojima and it shows. not in the over the top ends, but in the question of 'what should a force of state power do in peacetime?'. a lot about the banality of life.

oh awesome fact about that. guess who else is voiced by 'you wouldn't know a vampire if it jumped up and bit you in the dick' guy
23.01.2026 16:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0i even wrote an article about it for one of the streaming sites years back when they had the license for it/said site actually existed web.archive.org/web/20190615...
23.01.2026 16:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0i REALLY love patlabor cuz like. okay, everybody says the usual boring 'unlike most mecha anime, this one is about the characters'. patlabor is 'unlike most mecha anime, this one is about civic infrastructure and how giant robot fights are actually the last thing you want to have to do'
23.01.2026 16:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0couldn't fit it in but also giant robo the animation: the day the earth stood still. giant robo is so fucking good. probably also one of the best demonstrations of something that can be so good even when you do not know any of the backstory/lore of most of the characters and do not need to
23.01.2026 16:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0HELLLL yes
23.01.2026 16:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0some off the top of my head fave ovas of then, for diff reasons
zeiram the animation (iria is SO cool)
patlabor the early days (personal fave)
bubblegum crisis (japan LOVES streets of fire and so do i)
golden boy (like only actually funny ecchi ever)
cyber city oedo 808 (dumb as hell in best way)
it's a six episode OVA that's a prequel to the live action movies (which are also cool but not what i got exposed to as a kid). a real highlight of the "wait the sci-fi network is playing anime?" days back then. a breeze to watch with how short it is.
23.01.2026 16:18 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0iria from zeiram the animation and alys brangwin from phantasy star iv definitely the formative 90s "fuckkkkk she's so COOL" experiences/influences for me

23.01.2026 15:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0all of these statements feel way less like any kind of genuine political belief, whether core or even half-cocked, and more something people are telling themselves to avoid starting some kind of blackpill spiral
23.01.2026 15:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0also, cuz i bring this up every time i think about the giant bombcast skate 4 video: for those of you wondering, burgerdicks was trying to say 'skate4 biotch' and had a typo, which is way more obvious in retrospect

1980s sci-fi dystopia movie ala the running man but it's one british actor being shuffled through a seemingly infinite amount of panel shows, desperately hoping to one day earn the right to have a normal life again

believe so. i keep it in mind a lot for "we couldn't do anything about sinema and manchin" discussions. like let's take that as a given: could the democrats also not do anything to get the senators in biden's own state to get in line on a $15 minimum wage either?
22.01.2026 21:25 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0THEY JUST NEEDED TO FIX BLOCKING. AND MAYBE MAKE THE GOLF MINIGAME LESS TOUCHY. WHY
22.01.2026 20:55 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0really, really glad this piece of shit is gone this year
22.01.2026 19:38 β π 111 π 9 π¬ 4 π 0like god it's incredibly noticeable that they don't even have a shitty, watered down, poll tested compromised policy proposal they're coalescing around this time. it's just "fuuuck, shit's expensive!" (also made worse with how the message pre-trump 2 was 'the economy's great you stupid yokels')
22.01.2026 19:09 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 002.25.2021 Schumer Statement On Senate Parliamentarianβs Decision On The $15 Minimum Wage Washington, D.C. β Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) released the following statement today regarding the Senate Parliamentarianβs decision: βWe are deeply disappointed in this decision. We are not going to give up the fight to raise the minimum wage to $15 to help millions of struggling American workers and their families. The American people deserve it, and we are committed to making it a reality.β
would make more sense if they had a message other than "damn.... shit's expensive, huh?!" to it but not surprising that they don't have/don't want to pitch anything more than that
anyway remembering this from when the parliamentarian nuked $15 MW in 2021 and how much they've mentioned it since then
