All statewide California petitions require the signer has a sheet that tells you their major funders. If they don't have it, don't sign. If you don't know who the funders are because they sound like a pretty name, don't sign it.
I'll never forget visiting Rome with my then-12(?) year old and staying in that neighborhood. We stopped to look at all the cats and the ruins... The next day he said 'Mum, can we go see where Julius Caesar was stabbed?' I'd assumed it was in the Forum, imagine my surprise...
I'm deadly serious with this. A huge reason we're in the mess we're in is because the media treats evidenced policy like housing the homeless and decriminalising drugs as absurd, outrageous nonsense, and "you can't even say blackboard any more because of woke" as serious and meaningful.
Hahahaha I could just tell he was looking for a place to roll 😂
I frequently follow a certain kind of yapper on YouTube, and three of them seem pretty convinced there is/was an attempted coup on in Russia.
Apparently, the internet's been out in Moscow for a week or two, some inner circle types are thought to have already fled the country, and others are MIA.
This is a very strange moment, in how obvious it is that a major crisis is approaching, and how calmly and clearly people are observing it come. www.ft.com/content/3647...
My very first serious academic work was a study of how U.S. military and civilian defense officials simply refused to treat their Vietnamese counterparts as strategic actors that made rational decisions in their own interests, attuned to their own geography and survival.

I think it’s also a driver in AI growth. This idea that we should be able to do everything ourselves. It eats away at our motivation and need to make links, esp cross-disciplinary ones. It *feels* like an enabler in the moment, but in the long term, it’s a disenabler.
You know what I think would be really interesting? Bringing back oral presentations of papers and examinations. see what people actually know
“Don’t proudly announce an international war crime for at least 20 minutes” Pentagon challenge.

Thank you to the people who declined the money and went forward with this. So who's behind this?

Today we celebrate the fruits of one of the finest headlines ever to follow Betteridge’s Law, because it’s the 56th anniversary of “London’s most extended satanism flap”, when about 100 people broke into Highgate Cemetery to stake a vampire 🧵
