Retired librarian. Now I take care of my books (environment, politics). I try anyway to be useful. Special interest: land consumption, biodiversity loss, invasive species. I live in Sicily.

“The climate scientists we surveyed were unambiguous: current economic models can’t capture what matters most – the cascading failures and compounding shocks that define climate risk in a warmer world – and could undermine the very foundations of economic growth.”
Should be the top story everyday.
Research from our Biosciences Department and the British Trust for Ornithology shows that hotter European summers are reducing migratory birds’ ability to fuel up for their long journeys. These changes could have serious consequences for bird populations across Europe & Africa.

🙅 People across Europe are demanding a lead-free future.
7 in 10 European citizens support a strong EU ban. Yet the latest draft weakens the restriction by excluding bullets.
Lead puts human, wildlife and nature health at risk. Ignoring science and public demand is not leadership.

Current attack on environmental legislation goes much further than stopping the green deal. It tries to reverse 40 years of env lawmaking.
It will kill nature and people, harm most European companies & destroy the EU which is based on a common rules based market.

Major works for major events, or major events for major works? Their environmental impact alone would be enough to declare them dangerous. Here (the Cortina Olympics) it is demonstrated that they are also a deception from an economic standpoint.

The livestock industry bangs on bout not interfering with people's choices. But from grossly distorted subsidies to anti consumer legislation it keeps rigging the system.
To be clear, the vast majority of support does not go to support biodiversity rich grazing

🔴 Ozone pollution costs Europe 775,000 life-years and €80bn a year – yet methane, a main driver, is still ignored!
Our new #MethaneMatters study featured in today's @euobserver.com shows why EU action on methane is urgent and essential.

Not that many good news at the moment so take this one into the WE.
DK gov got EC state aid greenlight for a 1bn euro investment in farms buy out for nature restoration. Partbof the deal negotiated with farm unions and NGOs to meet climate and nitrogen targets.
In French updates, ex minister Duplomb resurrects its pesticides liberalisation bill which was killed by the supreme court. A doctored version will be added to the big farm lobby pleading bill of the new gov, alonside wolf killing, water theft, and other goodies.

The wolf as a scapegoat.
In Italy, as we know, when we don't want to address a problem with human causes, we blame the other animal in question.

💸 New @greenpeace.eu report exposes EU's corporate-run farming model.
EU subsidies = wealth for the rich: in some countries, the top 1% takes up to 40% while small-scale farmers go under, EU countryside is industrialised, and nature is destroyed☠️
It can be so different. Check our CAP vision below⤵️
An infographic titled "Most livestock in the United States are factory-farmed." It lists the percentages and numbers of animals raised in factory farms, defined by the EPA as operations with intensive feeding for over 45 days. Chickens: 99.96%, 9.2 billion; Turkeys: 99.8%, 260 million; Farmed fish: 100%, 530 million; Cows: 75%, 66 million; Egg-laying hens: 98.3%, 380 million; Pigs: 98.6%, 73 million. Data source: Sentience Institute (2024), with data from 2022.
Almost all livestock in the United States is factory-farmed—
It’s difficult to quantify animal suffering in a single number, but one metric often used to measure living conditions is the number of animals raised on “factory farms”.
Another obvious confirmation: more pesticides, fewer birds
