Big tech pays dearly for closed data to avoid copyright suits—why not channel that money into public datasets curated by universities, libraries, and art academies, boosting AI quality and funding public culture?

Science sleuths flag hundreds of papers that use AI without disclosing it Telltale signs of chatbot use are scattered through the scholarly literature — and, in some cases, have disappeared without a trace.

I hear few good practical ideas even from the anti-AI side; apart from complaining about bad AIs, praising a capitalistic idea of copyright and refusing to use them, risking falling behind—what’s the strategy?

I believe that the fight shouldn’t be targeted at the tool itself, but rather a political struggle against the system, in every possible way. I wouldn’t know which methods are the most effective—personally, I can only act through cultural resistance.

For me, mastering the medium, hacking it, and developing it if possible (starting from open source) is far better than a self-sabotaging boycott.

I actually think they’re very useful for many activity, since they’re general-purpose technologies. On the other hand – as an example – is translating a text a right-wing activity? I don’t even like the car industry (in fact, I like it even less), but unfortunately sometimes I have to travel by car

The same goes for the uncritical rejection of a tool that can also be used to strengthen one’s political activity. And if no one is actually rejecting it, so much the better—though many people keep telling me they don’t use i

To put it bluntly: everyone complaining about ‘AI slop’ does realize that humans have made 99% slop with every other creative tool too, right?

I wrote about the White House X account — which is steeped in the sociopathic posting style of far-right extremists — and seems to get more sinister and cruel with its posts each week of the administration. www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

That’s more effective than enforcing copyright on training datasets, which mostly helps big rights holders and leads to more biased AIs due to smaller, less flexible datasets. Believing copyright will stop AI or help artists is, to me, wishful thinking. You can disagree, but the position is clear.

Just to be clear and not mistaken for a crazed tech bro: when it comes to AI regulation, my stance is simple—mandatory open source, or at least rights-free for open source developers, to encourage public benefit.

A research agenda for encouraging prosocial behaviour on social media - Nature Human Behaviour Dörr et al. argue that research on social media has mainly focused on antisocial behaviours and call for more research on the ways in which social media platforms can empower prosocial behaviour.

How much energy will AI really consume? The good, the bad and the unknown Researchers want firms to be more transparent about the electricity demands of artificial intelligence.

Finally, a good article on the topic. Summary: they consume a lot, but relatively little compared to other sectors, and the future is a big question mark—impossible to predict. The only certainty is that these companies say nothing (long live open source).
