This is the first time in my life I’ve ever seen bioluminescent fungi in the wild. My #AutisticJoy right now is absolutely MAX. Nature SPIN achieved. +
Something had definitely been snacking on them.
But the stalks and fragments were scattered around the stump, and there were some fresh little clusters forming too. And under the UV…They glowed. +
So obviously my brain went: “RETURN AT NIGHT WITH THE UV TORCH.” So tonight I went back. The woods look completely different in the dark, and I absolutely got a bit lost trying to find the tree again. But eventually…I found them. 🍄✨ +
Sulphur Tufts can appear almost year-round, but they’re most common Sept–Nov. Yesterday, on a dog walk, I spotted a dead oak in the woods with a beautiful, intact little troop of Sulphur Tufts growing inside a crack. +
So, for Christmas this year, I asked for a UV torch to go mushroom hunting at night. My lovely sister delivered.
Unfortunately, it was already past peak mushroom season in the UK (autumn), so I wasn’t sure I’d actually find any this time of year. +
Most often on beech, oak, birch, and other hardwoods, but sometimes on conifers too. What makes them extra fascinating is that they’re bioluminescent. That means the fungus can produce its own faint light through a chemical reaction (similar to how glow-worms or fireflies work)+
A species of mushroom called Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) grows commonly across the UK.
You’ll usually find them growing in dense clusters on dead or decaying wood, especially tree stumps, fallen logs, or buried roots. +
I am SO excited about this. One of my long-term special interests (I recently heard them called SPINs, which I find endlessly cute) is mushroom ID.
And tonight I finally saw something I’ve wanted to see for years. 🍄✨+

This week has looked like: no exercise, basic food, and skin-picking sneaking back in. My hormones have left my skin red, dry, blotchy, and breaking out. +
I also live with chronic illness, and I’m AuDHD, so when the hormonal dip hits, it *really* hits. Years ago, it felt destructive. These days, with therapy, movement, support, and a very patient partner, it’s more self-sabotage than self-destruction. Not life sparkling progress, but still progress. +
I really hate PMDD.
This week I’ve had no energy. My period was only two days late, but the symptoms were loud. When you live with PMDD, you learn it isn’t just about hormones; it can feel like your brain turns on you. +
