These things were appreciated the same way as art and literature, save for the harem or ecchi centric titles. Like people weren't talking about DOAX like fine art, but Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, etc. were discussed that way. The shift away from that happened around the same time as Gamergate.

Before that bullshit, I was on official message boards and video game forums and while there were always a few idiots, most of the time it was enthusiastic discussion between fans of video games. There was significantly less conservative rhetoric around anime or games back then.

Yeah so Gamergate, the sudden massive influx of right wing sexists and racists in the online gaming sphere, was an indoctrination psyop run by Epstein and a cabal of conservative pedophiles attempting to push their agenda while continuing to rape and kill children to the surprise of nobody sane.
