If you've got time for the option I don't see why not, but overall I feel like screen stuff tends to obscure information more than it provides it. This might be less relevant in a non-action game though.

No screen stuff for me. I'm totally cool with character flashing bright red for a frame or two, a nice crunchy buzz noise, all of that stuff (ideally reactive to the type of damage), but keep it to my character.
