Before [Sekiro’s] release we only knew of a few [prosthetic tools], so imagining the types of weapons Sekiro might equip sent my mind reeling with possibilities. In that moment, I came up with the “Prosthetic Art Challenge” – a guide to help artists give form to the tools in our imagination. [...] One month before Sekiro’s release, I was invited to FromSoftware’s offices to see and play the game early. I came bearing a laminated art book filled with this incredible, unofficial art, hoping to relay employee reactions back to the artists. My passion, at its simplest, is photography. Specifically photography of abandoned, often forgotten, post-human spaces and structures. Tumbledown cloisters, vaults open to the sky, rusting sea platforms, overgrown aerodromes. These are spaces that were once right at the center of things. But either suddenly or over years and decades, life moved on. The world moved on. The air has grown thick and the walls have lost color and the windows have broken. Writing lore in such a way that analyses itself has helped me to make history that isn't just dressing, but actually has some level of thematic relevance.

I tend to completely over-complicate everything. MagicaVoxel has a limit of 1024 by 1024 voxels, so you cannot go past that point. I never can go for an incredibly tall building [...]. So I’m really constrained to that cube that I have. At first it was like [working with LEGO], literally block-by-block building. But then I would put so much time in and craft little high-detailed asset packs, like bundles, for myself. So then every time I wanted to play around I would just use those. For example I now had arches, I had domes, I had walls, I had pillars, so I was just playing with those. I wouldn’t have to build from scratch anymore after I had those things. It became easier. Much like its spiritual predecessor, Dark Souls serves as an examination of the human condition. But whereas Demon’s Souls seems to be genuinely inquiring into the nature of man, Dark Souls has already reached its conclusion, damning as it is. There is no ambiguity on what defines a man versus a god or a demon. Our nature is known and easy to discern, and it is dark. Greed enables terrible things, practically demands it, and it is inherent to man, our original sin.
