You don't hear The Three Investigators mentioned much! And I don't remember them being popular in school or anything - but that might just be my memory!

Famous Five for me & yes there is George (Georgina) a girl who identified as a boy in a series of books written in the 1940’s.

No one got their knickers in a knot, in fact the books were lauded and turned into a kid’s tv series which was very popular.
