I just did some reading about this and it was not a very edifying use of my time

Oh no what happened here?! 😬 As a book prize judge, I would agree that many feted authors cannot write, but I wouldn't be so bold as to claim a single cause, and if I did, it would certainly not be this one

Wow... & yes, ultimately it's not about the actual number, but the desired one. Presumably this is relevant to the financial troubles at Hallam of the past few years.

They should also list the fees these students pay when they note seemingly small numbers enrolled. A more useful % would be these students' fees as % of total student fee income, since 73 students @ c. Β£30k p/a is well over 2 million, not an inconsiderable sum.

Please share! The book doing well means I can write another (and fulfil my dream of owning a pizza oven), so it’s pretty serious

Could you drop Voce books a line, in Birmingham? Lovely little bookshop in Digbeth that does regular events. If you ended up doing something there, I could pass details to my old colleagues.

Elaine's in new town, a delightful place to visit as much for her tales about radical feminism in the 1970s as her clothing selection!

(hoping this doesn't make me look like I've joined Reform's historical reenactment wing) I've been enjoying my corduroy women's land army breeches, with side buttons at the top and laces at the calf, made in 1947

my band Shinlifter have their EP launch on Saturday and with impeccable timing our Instagram has been hacked so we’ve lost our main channel for promoting it. if anyone wanted to help share this brilliant poster by my pal Grace there, here or elsewhere we’d be very grateful!

Sorry to weirdly reply to this very late, but one of the Pearl films fits this thesis, in case you've not seen them!

Thanks! Can't believe I've become one of those people asking 'what about Scotland?' when I see new Westminster HE policy decisions 😭 I guess I could just seriously learn about devolution, but my one wild and precious life, etc

21.10.2025 12:14 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Thanks. I understand it's devolved, just wasn't sure if it would affect our fee income from English students (as in, will we now be offering cheaper degrees - seemingly yes), or if devolved nations tended to follow suit. I guess the latter probably just remains to be seen.

Interesting report which resonates with things my students told me when I worked at Birmingham. Proper student journalism is important for holding institutions to account and needs supporting!

Anyone have info on how this will affect Scottish unis? Will fees for English students go up here, too, even though we don't have TEF? Obviously in some sense it's all moot, when the government message remains 'we're not going to help you, and we won't let you help yourselves, either'

This is very good, and a genuinely useful explanation of aspects of book manufacturing that regularly annoy me, but which I hadn't linked together as having a common cause.

Very much so! I've started to understand this more since I took on the James Tait Black lead judge role, and now get many parcels from publishers every day, all quite different. This conversation makes me think I should be making some records about the packaging as well as the submissions!

Thanks to both of you! Lucy is amazing; as well as the box book, I still think about a paper she gave in Cork about washing lines. Very happy we have the chance to do some proper work together. The other Co-I, Antonia, is a contemporary archaeologist, so it's a fun combination of disciplines.

What's in the box? In 1672, Elias Ashmole was approached by a man who wanted to show him a β€œChest of Cedar wood” that his wife had bought at a market. She had β€œheard some

I just mentioned this in another reply and thought it might also be relevant to your project, Claire! My collaborator Lucy wrote a book about books and boxes. Nice review here. 'It’s also hard to tell where book ends and box begins.' www.the-tls.com/regular-feat...
