If they non-tendered him he would have been signed right away by a team happy to pay $4.1 million for a No. 2 or 3 starter in 2027. Why would the Sox give that away for nothing?

Tanner Houck, who had elbow surgery in August, popping the mitt a bit today. It’s unlikely he pitches this season but he’s trying.

As it turns out I didn't have anything to do with putting that there 14 years ago. Feel free to contact the park if you're that upset.

Instead of a number there will be statue of him adjusting the bone chips in his elbow after throwing the ball over George Scott's head.

One of the Red Sox’ biggest recent hires is a β€˜really bright’ whiz of a pitching coach - The Boston Globe Quinn Cleary, a Newton native, childhood Sox fan, and member of a famous Boston sports family, is the assistant director of pitching and head pitching strategist.

Another fresh story from Fort Myers: Tim Healy on assistant director of pitching Quinn Cleary, whose local ties run deep:

Show me where you criticized the Sale trade. You can’t. Nobody did at the time. But now everybody knew. It’s BS. And Schwarber just didn’t work with Martinez signed. Nobody’s fault. It just didn’t fit. Two DHs can’t work.

Walks, errors. The usual stuff. Both teams.

Jarren Duran’s place in baseball world is much different in his return to WBC - The Boston Globe The Red Sox outfielder was a largely unproven big leaguer when he played for Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Now, Duran joins Mexico as one of its stars.

On Baseball from Fort Myers: Jarren Duran returns to the WBC this week a different player than he was three years ago.

But his motivation is the same:

Padres signed Alex Verdugo to a minor league contract per the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee. He had been out of baseball since last July 5 when the Braves released him.

The big return in the historically awful Mookie Betts trade has only 4.1 bWAR the last four seasons.

Since I wrote this 38 minutes ago we're now only through six innings and people are steadily streaming for the exits.

From an aesthetic standpoint, Red Sox games in spring training have been a wreck. Middle of the 5th and we're closing in on two hours.

Arias will start tomorrow at SS in Dunedin. "We'll probably see him a lot this week. It'll be good for me to see him play and him to be around big leaguers and playing against big leaguers," Cora said.

No. As was posted, they have extra playing time with so many guys going to the WBC. Beyond that, he played 116 games last season, so scouts have had plenty of looks at him. And who would they be trading their top position player prospect for in March?

Interesting tidbit from Alex Cora's pre-game: Well-regarded 20-year-old SS prospect Franklin Arias will get some playing time in the MLB games during the WBC.
