YouTube video by Posit PBC 10 Years of Data Science Tools...and What Happens Next (Jonathan McPherson) | posit::conf(2025)

My keynote about data science tools at posit::conf is now online! I originally meant it to be a talk about Positron, but as I was writing it, it took a left turn through the history of RStudio and into the philosophy of tool design & how to build stuff for people.

Example of using `filter_out()` on the `penguins` dataset, showing how it is much easier than `filter()`, especially with `NA`s

Example of using `filter_out()` on the `penguins` dataset, showing how it is much easier than `filter()`, especially with `NA`s

We are looking for #rstats community feedback on 3 new dplyr functions!

We're aiming to expand the `filter()` family:

- `filter()` to keep rows
- `filter_out()` to drop rows
- `when_any()` and `when_all()` as modifiers

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Statistics seminar "The Metrics" on November 6, 2025
YouTube video by Chris Bilder University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Statistics seminar "The Metrics" on November 6, 2025

If you're following the #UNL #statistics saga (proposed for elimination based on bad stats), you might find the seminar we gave yesterday interesting... youtu.be/fUk2R0UYWpA

It was weird to rail against someone for an hour, but strangely cathartic, and the #datavis seems to have been effective?

Hopefully, today the #statistics department finds out what the acad prog cmte will recommend to the chancellor. The next step is the #nebraskaRegents. We have a letter-writing campaign to show this set of cuts is politically unpopular and will hurt the state.

You don’t need a plan or the perfect question to use ChatGPT.
Just start typing whatever’s on your mind — a half-baked idea, a random question, a weird "what if."
ChatGPT is built for all of it.
No pressure. No perfect prompts. Explore ideas, create images, write stories, and summarize files in just a simple conversation.

I just got this email from ChatGPT. Is anyone really worried that people are holding off until they have "a plan or the perfect question" to use these tools?! Or was this reaction-bait that I fell for?

What is it @github.com @githubeducation.bsky.social? Am I faculty or am I not faculty? Why do you keep asking me the same question, after saying you won't ask for 2 years, and then not believing my answer?
