I just think it's not an evolution of tactics as much as it is more teams who are competitive at the talent and analytic level - more teams can do interesting things now instead of the interesting things to do are different now. Ymmv of course about how different the two views are

Interesting. My sense with Lankshear was that he went to West Brom who got Armstrong just after and he was buried behind him on the bench more than he was shit, but I didn't see hardly any of the games so I could easily have been wrong.

My question about this has to do with how many of Spurs' loanees have gone on loan and not played much - Veliz, Scarlett, Lankshear last year for example. Obviously that's to a degree on the player, but it's not helping the club much that I can tell.

I don't think it's the same as what Klopp did, but I also think that Klopp altered his system every match, just like every top manager does. This feels like the "Ange only plays one way" thing. Maresca's game plan was both specific to that match, and also true to the principles he always uses.

I don't believe that it's news to anyone 15 years after Klopp first won the Bundesliga with Dortmund how this works. It's not that PSG is "outwitted" - Chelsea executed and PSG didn't.

Any team can win or lose any game, so seeing more into it I think is silly. But it's still really variations on three themes: high line, mid block, and low block. And while each of the three types gets more variety, it's always more about execution than one of the three ideas being "better" I think

I don't know; none of this seems like much to me. The original Pep innovation was that you can defend by having technically excellent players who keep possession - teams can't attack without the ball. Lots of tweaks to this idea keep making it viable in different ways for technical enough teams

Such a delight to be back at the Delacorte last night for the return of Shakespeare in the Park, and charmed by @bradlander.bsky.social fabulous introduction. It's a joyous and hilarious production of Twelfth Night with a stellar cast and I can't recommend it enough.

I would be pretty cautious in saying that Chelsea beating PSG in the club world cup has any broad tactical implications. If I had to identify what Pep is talking about, it's that more teams are pressing sides, not just sitting back and playing on the counter. Which, yes, sure

None of those four teams play all that much like one another. And it also seems kind of disingenuous given that the two most dominant forms of football last season were Enrique and Flick. Not that I expect veracity from Pep in the press

The older I get, the more I want my sports fandom to be like watching a long running soap opera: there are heroes and villains, plot twists and turns, and while I have my hates and favorites, I enjoy the continuing nature of the story. Some seasons are better than others, but so it goes

I don't have any sense of doom or anxiety about the coming season for Spurs. I don't think they will be good, but I look forward to seeing and rooting for them and I'm sure there will be interesting players whose game grows in cool ways and it's fun to see what happens. I want to see what happens
