Equality is not conditional and human rights frameworks exist to safeguard those most at risk of exclusion.
On #HumanRightsDay, GIRES stands with trans and gender-diverse people across the UK and beyond. Protecting their rights strengthens human rights for all.
#TransRightsAreHumanRights
π Human rights do not change because someone is trans or gender diverse.
The phrase "trans rights are human rights" matters because it recentres the conversation on what is truly at stake. It pushes back against attempts to treat trans people as an exception to the rules that protect everyone else
Trans rights are human rights. This principle is central to international human rights law. Yet it is increasingly contested in debate.
Every person has the right to safety, dignity, privacy, family life, healthcare, education, and participation in society without discrimination.

Girlguiding and the WI have announced new policies that exclude trans women and girls.
GIRES has set out why this approach is not required by law and why exclusion harms those already facing the greatest barriers to belonging. Read our full statement here:

Following the For Women Scotland v. Scottish Ministers ruling, trans advocacy groups say the UK must be held accountable for ongoing rights violations and have called on the Committee of Ministers to reopen enforcement of Goodwin v. UK.

π’ Trans rights groups are taking the UK Government back to the ECtHR.
TACC and Trans Exile Network have filed a joint case arguing that the UK has never complied with the 2002 Goodwin v UK ruling - which established privacy and recognition rights for trans people under Article 8.
GIRES stands with the trans community in honouring their legacy, and we remain committed to preserving the stories, and lived experiences of trans+ lives that shape our understanding. By safeguarding their memory, we help ensure all trans+ lives continue to guide and strengthen the next generation.
For the trans+ people we have lost, those traces form part of the shared knowledge and understanding that holds our community together. Their lives continue in the support we offer each other, the lessons we carry forward, and the spaces we fight to make safer.
These encounters shape the people around them, sometimes in ways that are never spoken aloud. Their impact continues through the lives they touched. For no one moves through the world without leaving traces of themselves behind.
Each person we honour today - and every trans+ person who travels through life - changes the world simply by being part of it. A conversation, an act of kindness, a moment of honesty, the courage to exist openly, or the quiet strength to keep going.
Today, on Trans Day of Remembrance, we remember the trans people whose lives were taken too soon. It is a day of loss, but it is also a reminder that every trans+ life holds meaning, not only in grand moments but in everyday interactions.

This is a crucial win for trans rights and equality law, but ongoing vigilance is needed to ensure accurate, equality guidance replaces it.

π’ After pressure from the @GoodLawProject.bsky.social The EHRC has withdrawn its interim guidance on single-sex spaces - a document that had encouraged trans exclusion.
The EHRC had wrongly implied that trans people could be routinely excluded from services protected under the Equality Act.

#TransAwarenessWeek
We have created a short 5 minute survey to help us understand what the trans+ community, those who support them, and our professional partners need from the new site.
#TransAwarenessWeek
Better resources mean trans+ people are not left constantly having to explain or defend their existence, and can just focus on living their lives - visible, or not.
To help us develop the most beneficial and accessible website, we are reaching out for input from anyone who uses our current website.
Everyone benefits from clear, accessible, evidence-based information that deepens understanding and supports inclusion.
That is why we are building a new GIRES website. Our aim is to create a trusted, accessible resource that individuals, families, professionals, and organisations can turn to.
Trans+ people are often expected to carry the responsibility of educating others about their lives, identities, and experiences, while having endless resilience.
We believe building awareness about trans lives should never rest solely on the shoulders of trans people.
#TransAwarenessWeek
π³ββ§ Trans Awareness Week is an important moment, but it also highlights a difficult reality that many trans+ people face throughout the year.
This expectation can be exhausting and unfair, especially in a climate where trans visibility comes with risk as well as pressure.
