In English, comparatives almost always end in the suffix ‘-er’ e.g. bigger, smaller, taller, older. Thankfully, Irish has a system that’s not that difficult to learn.

Hi John! Indeed, you see it quite a lot online, particularly on native Irish speakers' videos on TikTok, for example. Or we've repeatedly seen people 'correct' native Irish speakers' Irish because they expect the standard.
10.05.2025 21:35 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Thank you - yes, this is true. I will amend to make this more clear as well.
10.05.2025 19:21 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Thanks for pointing this out. We'll take a closer look and see if we can tweak it to reflect it more. As a general note, it was a group of folks who worked on this piece, so there may be fine-tuning needed.
10.05.2025 19:00 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Easy fix, I've edited to include learners/speakers.
10.05.2025 18:55 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Also, 'native speakers' has a specific definition. Namely someone who grew up with the language (often in an immersive environment), not someone simply from a country. That's hardly an opinion, but the definition of the word.
10.05.2025 16:39 — 👍 9 🔁 1 💬 0 📌 0Too right, Sinéad.
10.05.2025 18:48 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0A fair comment and I have removed 'just' - it's not meant as disparaging, rather, there is quite a difference usually in the standard of native Irish speakers vs mostly school-led. Unfortunately, though as mentioned earlier, it's very difficult to express tone online. It's a welcome discussion.
10.05.2025 18:47 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Yes, definitely agree that there are many non-native Irish speakers who have fantastic Irish. All we're saying is that we recognise that there's a difference in how native Irish speakers acquire the language and their history with the language as opposed to non-native speakers.
10.05.2025 18:42 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Everyone is welcome to speak / learn Irish - there's no one debating that in the slightest, Sinead? There's also nowhere in the post where it says 'non-native speakers not welcome'. Everyone is capable of reaching a high standard of Irish. But we also need to support minority language communities.
10.05.2025 18:40 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0No one is stopping you Sinead - that's wonderful. As I reiterate again everyone should be able to learn Irish. This post was simply about supporting native Irish speakers in the Gaeltachtaí and acknowledging that they exist. No one is saying 'down with non-native speakers'
10.05.2025 18:39 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0And this 'everyone's a native' contributes to it. By all means, use whatever Irish you have. Cleachtadh a dhéananns an mháistreacht. But also always be improving and Is fearr Gaeilge bhlasta na Béarla snasta
