To idenify another band who might claim this title of equally overrated but actually decent, I feel like you have to go back to canon of enshrined bands of the 60s and 70s. So in that sense, Oasis fully fulfilled their dream goal of being part of that canon.

If you look at a US equivalent to Oasis (one and a half great albums, defined an era by trading on nostalgia and now benefit from it, pretty but obnoxious frontman - maybe The Strokes?) it's probably someone who huge swathes of people in the United States can ignore existing (like The Strokes)

and then in the US, Oasis benefitted from very few of the negative cultural signifiers they had translating, which is why you get Snail Mail wearing an Oasis t-shirt and not the shirt of any famously chauvinistic 90s American band

It has to be a British band or a band big in the UK because the country is small enough but also used to have a fervent music press, so it was possible for both commercial & critical success to go into wild excess in the late 90s.

I keep seeing frustration (this is just the latest) over media only covering the horrors, not what to do about them—but they seem to miss stories about what people *are* doing.
