The robot in my phone
Says this video is from
Four Corners but it’s not-
It’s also not Arizona or Utah.
It is DinΓ© Nation, land of the
Navajo, who hold animals
As sacred. Dogs in particular
Are earth listeners, and here
Lenny narrates to me what
He feels and hears and sees.

Lenny Bruce, rescue poodle terrier mix, looking precious

This is the preface
To every day, greeted
By such precious.
He’s been in recovery
From pancreatitis
But still greets us
With kisses and hugs
Before courageously
Eating his breakfast.

Lenny Bruce, a poodle terrier mix with honey hair, looks at Cassie as they lie on a couch and she reads a book and wears Lenny-themed slippers

When peace comes,
It won’t be rushing
To a getaway car
Like Bonny and Clyde,
It won’t be because
You tried and tried,
But because you let
Go, let gravity flow
Over your body and
Admitted that this is
All you ever wanted
Or needed to feel
Deep peace. Peace. Peace.

Halfway through your interview with @nicollewallace.bsky.social
now, very moved as always by your kindness and wisdom, and can’t wait to share the book with my mil fam friends. We need more leaders who can cry when they speak of love.

Thank you. Yes. We still tear up when we think of her. But we know that’s the testament to how she loves us.

Cassie’s daughter at 14 with her bunny Harmony aka Dooje aka The Bunz

From the age of 8 to 16,
My daughter had a bunny
Named Harmony, and they
Were best friends, ate and
Slept and stayed together
Constantly. When she died,
We held a family ceremony
And feel she became an
Ascended master. Harmony
Is the ability to love and be
Connected in deep belief.

In March We Fell in Love

The ground is wet and filled with robins.
The trees are bare and waiting for spring.
The birds are looking for food and happy.
The air is singing
a song of everything.
The sun is hiding in blankets of clouds.
The moon is asleep and dreaming.
The stars are always there.
Whether or not
they are seen.
My past is the fertile ground for the present.
My body is waking to its own full love.
My belly is where I find my feelings.
My heart is singing
in praise of being.
There is dew on the grass.
The ground is open.
Lightning comes down to ignite our steps.
It shines on the empty places where we
come out.

Lightning appears in my poem, β€œIn March We Fell in Love,” written during this month 13 years ago when my wife and I did just that. The lightning and the love.

The poem found a home in the September 2020 issue of @samfiftyfour.bsky.social

I found a home in her. πŸ’œ

Like Carlotta, the green turtle who returns to the sea after finally arriving homebound to lay her eggs, I watch spellbound as the clock jumps forward on my way to the airport for a sunrise flight. As she knows, time is magical and depends on the angle of light.

#AWP is a wrap! I had a dream of a time doing the readings and signings and hearing such beautiful writing and selling some books and seeing good friends.

Writing is a way of taking creative action in the face of destruction.

From what I saw of the 11,000 writers here, trust me:

We got this. 🩷

Engagement, wedding, and anniversary rings, all made by independent women artists in Washington State.

My engagement ring,
Modeled after tree branch,
Pulled from her pocket
On stage before singingβ€”
Wedding band, too, tree ring
Themed. But the ring for our
10-year anniversary vow
Renewal ceremony is waves
And islands in the Salish Sea.
She knows this world is the
Real jewelry to me.

The first marine being to narrate my new novel is Carlotta, a green sea turtle who lays her eggs 130 miles from where the coastline was before sudden sea level rise.

But magnanimous in the face of calamitous is her motto, and she’s really good at math, so she lays 130 eggs.

Navigating Eco-Anxiety: Creating Calm in a Climate Collapsed World

REGISTER at link above In this 4-session class, participants will learn concrete strategies to cope with and heal from their anxiety and grief in a world that feels increasingly difficult to navigate due to climate crises. Based on twenty years of work as an author and teacher on the themes of environmental awareness, trauma, healing, and creativity, Dr. Cassie Premo Steele will teach a variety of lessons that will create a safe and nurturing space for participants to hold their emotions around environmental destruction while also learning creative ways to self-regulate so new forms of connection and community can begin to grow.

I’ve been talking to folks here at AWP about the class I’m teaching in April that incorporates writing, mindfulness and trauma-informed practices to help navigate climate change and eco-anxiety, so I thought I’d share the link in case you’re interested. πŸ’š
