I do like how the article says 'could compromise user privacy' as if that weren't the intent.

Human artists, use only one piece of art to convince people to follow you 💚✨

And then there's the recent discussion about requiring a driver's licence to ride an ebicycle, further depriving people who can't drive of transport options.

i feel like i see a lot of "mysterious new account makes big bet on insider information" news stories and not enough people-being-arrested-for-that news stories

Whatever you might think of Maduro, the seizure and kidnapping of a head of state takes us to a very dark place. Vast, arbitrary, extra-legal power, which could be exercised almost anywhere, regardless of the character of the target government.

If Trump can do that to Maduro, where does it stop? With who?

Wonder how many hours it’ll take European leaders to agree a mildly-worded statement of light rebuke.

(my understanding is that her views on trans issues were utter crap, unfortunately)

Screenshot of text:
“To say that straight men are heterosexual is only to say that they engage in sex (fucking exclusively with the other sex, i.e., women). All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men. The people whom they admire, respect, adore, revere, honor, whom they imitate, idolize, and form profound attachments to, whom they are willing to teach and from whom they are willing to learn, and whose respect, admiration, recognition, honor, reverence and love they desire… those are, overwhelmingly, other men. In their relations with women, what passes for respect is kindness, generosity or paternalism; what passes for honor is removal to the pedestal. From women they want devotion, service and sex.

Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving.”
― Marilyn Frye, The Politics of Reality: Essays in Feminist Theory

What an odd coincidence, I stumbled across this quote this morning:

Title: 'Light From Uncommon stars'
Author: Ryka Aoki
Comment: 'A transformative marvel, I Loved This Book' by TJ Klune, New York Times bestselling author of The House in the Curulean Sea
Background: starscape with a koi

Definitely 'Light from Uncommon Stars' by Ryka Aoki. Is it a trans coming-of-age found-family story? Is it a sci-fi story with aliens? Is it a modern fantasy dealing with pacts with devils? Is it a musical story about embracing your talent and performing?

Yes, all of them.

You'd think so, but I don't recall anything about it in LotR, Silm, or Unfinished tales (have HoME but haven't read it yet); there's about a thousand years between the Istari arriving and the fall of Moria, so there's plenty of time for him to make friends even if he stayed in the south.

2019 feels like forever ago – I finished my PhD at the end of that year, right into the pandemic and every university shutting down 😅 Things have improved since then, and I hope things have been okay at your end too!

FTR this is entirely consistent with my own recollections. There was no sense of responsibility, no sense of shared loss, little reflection (outside the first day) of how our culture might lead to radicalisation and violence – any idea that we had any fault was dropped after a day or two.

I went to a Chabad high school. People I know are affected by events at Bondi today.

Out of all the social media, Bluesky is the only one asking me to prove my age (biometric face scan, credit card, or ID). It's also one of the few I use that aren't required to.

Considering jumping ship.

I would definitely have AotC higher, but am happy with Rogue One's ranking (I don't think it would survive as a stand-alone film without at least the original trilogy for context).

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, where we recognise trans people who died by violence.

TW murder, suicide.

I don't want to argue about whether people like me should be ground into fertiliser in my spare time. So I don't! And if people develop tools to help them avoid the same, good for them.

A Tweet that's stuck with me is Michael Dorlan's: 'When you argue that fascists should be defeated through debate what you’re actually suggesting is that vulnerable minorities should have to endlessly argue for their right to exist and that at no point should the debate be considered over and won.'

NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro (CLP) is doing this either out of reckless negligence toward, or with the intention of, procuring trans women inmates for the purpose of having them raped.

This is what sending trans women to men's prisons does. This is all it ever does. This is what it is for.
