Great to see spotlight on #FND at #PSIConf2025 with

Thanks @fndportal.bsky.social! It was actually a last minute sub off the bench when I discovered my suit jacket has been having an argument with it's buttons on route and were in the process of a trial separation which I could not resolve.

ISTDP Core Training Information. ISTDP Health was established to support clinicians in the UK to develop their clinical
practice and facilitate community connection. We offer an IEDTA accredited three-year
core training programme based in Exeter in the South-West. The programme curriculum
is designed to enable clinicians to develop their understanding of the theory and practice
of ISTDP and to be effective in applying this to individual work and in complex public
healthcare settings.
This is a small group training delivered in the peaceful
setting of the University of Exeter. There will be five face-
to-face teaching blocks of two days per year. We use a
competency-based approach with an emphasis on
establishing clinical understanding and effective
therapeutic practice. Trainees will be required to bring
video recordings of therapy cases and will receive live
supervision. There will be careful attention to individual
and group processes to support the learning experience.
Trainees will also be invited to attend the ISTDP Health Seminar Series which offers
three additional 90-minute online teaching sessions a year and an annual in-person
ISTDP Health Day Conference.

Why do we use Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) as a treatment option in our multi-disciplinary pathway for Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)?

Thanks for your interest @neurochallenged.bsky.social.

I comment on the rationale and evidence base in my post below. Some good emerging evidence for long-term outcomes in the meta-analysis of short term psychodynamic therapies for functional symptoms.

I hope you find this helpful.

🧡 ISTDP for functional symptoms in a nutshell πŸ₯œ

🧠 Bodily symptoms can result from habitual avoidance of emotions & physical anxiety states in the brain & nervous system.

πŸ’” Habitual avoidance can be learned early in life when showing emotions led to parent overwhelm, rejection, or harm.

Developing a multidisciplinary pathway for functional neurological disorders in a UK National Health Service: The Exeter model | ACNR Functional neurological disorders remain common presentations to NHS services. How should clinical pathways for patients be structured?

Functional neurological disorders are common across public healthcare settings.

The Exeter model is a multidisciplinary approach developed in the absence of additional funding to help meet the needs of patients who have FND from within mainstream services.

Sounds good! We certainly found ACT/Mindfulness helpful as part of our FND public health offer in the south-west UK.
