It represents historical patterns of migration and integration, rather than a static racial/ethnic category.
The variation has great implications in using racial/ethnic categories in research especially regarding measuring genetic differences.

π§΅Why self-reported race/ethnicity cannot represent ancestry?
In our last Journal Club, Author Mateus H. Gouveia shared important insight from the paper, "Subcontinental genetic variation in the All of Us Research Program". The ancestry data from All of Us program shows great variation

πThe authors show that those who use medicalized narratives are more likely to display ableist cues, whereas researchers who include autistic people in their work or adopt social or embodiment models show fewer such cues.

πUsing survey data from 195 autism researchers, the study finds that some research languages can reproduce ableist ideas β through dehumanization, objectification, or stigmatization. Language itself can normalize exclusion and even violence when it obscures the humanity of autistic people.
