Well said. It was clearly a well planned, disciplined demonstration and the brave people there knew what they were doing.

Arresting any of those peaceful protesters was daft and immoral. Had you chosen to engage in civil disobedience and the police said "Well we won't arrest you; you are in a wheelchair" what would you have said?

If you read about Wisteria Lodge it's always the home of the bluff ex India colonel or the awful upwardly mobile middle class lady. Whereas it should be "that ruined house where the plants broke in overnight, throttled the inhabitants, and took out the roof."

Nice flowers though.

NEW: Parliament Square, London right now.

Thousands in a silent, peaceful protest against both the genocide in Gaza and the UK Government prescribing protest group Palestine Action as a terrorist group.

Police now making arrests.

Finally finishing this. I'm enjoying it. Read a chapter when I first got it, then put it down and didn't pick it up. Don't know why. It's really thought-provoking.

By the author of the hugely successful 'The Thorn Birds' It is a truth universally acknowledged that anyone who loved PRIDE AND PREJUDICE will want to know what happened to the Bennet sisters... Twenty years on, Jane has a happy marriage and large family; Lizzy and Mr Darcy now have a formidable social reputation; Lydia has a reputation of quite another kind; Kitty is much in demand in London's parlours and ballrooms; but what of Mary? Mary is quietly celebrating her independence, having nursed her ailing mother for many years. She decides to write a book to bring the plight of the poor to everyone's attention. But with more resolve than experience, as she sets out to travel around the country, it's not only her family who are concerned about her. Marriage may be far from her mind, but what if she were to meet the one man whose own fiery articles infuriate the politicians and industrialists? And what if when she starts to ask similar questions, she unwittingly places herself in great danger?

I haven't read this but I highly recommend The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet by Colleen McCollough of the Thorn Birds for a really different look at all the sisters. The blurb gives some idea but you also see Jane and Lizzy's marriages quite differently in it.

Two groups clash on immigration outside Bristol hotel About 400 counter-protesters collect outside a hotel housing asylum seekers and refugees.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Thank you to the good people of Bristol who showed up today to counter the far-right protestors at a hotel housing asylum seekers. I should have been there too. #RefugeesWelcome #StandUpToRacism

It’s not just charlatans like Farage, deliberately spreading misinformation to inflame tensions

It’s Starmer’s β€œisland of strangers” speech. Theresa May’s β€œgo home” vans

It’s every politician who has taken up β€œstop the boats” as a campaign slogan

This is where it’s led us. And it has to end here.

I used to have a dog terrified of balloons, blimps, kites etc. This was in LA and there wasn't much room to run away from the Goodyear blimp passing above the park. Current dog doesn't even notice the giant Bristol balloons that come over our garden.

Substack’s extremist ecosystem is flourishing The app's recent swastika push alert was just the tip of the iceberg.

Back in 2023, @katz.theracket.news published a piece in The Atlantic about Substack’s Nazi problem, which led to us launching the Substackers Against Nazis campaign. We both subsequently left the platform, but many insisted the problem wasn’t *that* bad. Katz’s follow-up report finds it def is.

My British husband says fanny is on par with willie--not terribly offensive. Just descriptive of genitalia. But a female friend just said it is not a word used with children. I've lived in UK 15 yrs and still confused.

My sister came to visit me for the first time in the 15 years I've lived in England. Today I said goodbye and put her on a train to London. It's very sad. [She doesn't leave the country until Tues but as much as I love her, one Heathrow run was enough for me. Let her have a day or so in London]

@mrhenrymorris.substack.com There are other platforms out there that don't push white supremacist materials the way substack does. I mean, it fits with this particular column but in general do you want to keep supporting them?
