Angled side view of a large turtle on the sand bank of a river. The turtle has a massive head, and the mouth is wide open, revealing a strongly hooked beak on both top and bottom. The carapace (top shell) has prominent keels that look like mountain peaks. The head and limbs are a dark, marbled brown, and the carapace is almost black in color.

More of the MS-LA theme with an Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) from Louisiana. These large turtles dwell on river bottoms with jaws open, wiggling a fleshy pink worm-like protuberance inside their mouths to entice unwary fish. #herps #turtles #TurtleTuesday #NaturePhotography🌿

A large, robust salamander on a white background. Lateral view, looking down from about a 45 degree angle. Head facing to the left. Tail on right but curved down towards bottom of frame. The salamander has a thick tail, body and legs. The body almost looks swollen due to the large number of eggs this female is carrying. The salamander has a dark gray to black background, with a mix of light gray-blue and gray, indistinct splotches on its side. The splotches are lighter neard the belly and get darker towards the back.

One of our impressive unisexual Ambystoma salamanders from the 2025 breeding season, which has largely wrapped up at our sites in northeast Ohio.

A large neotenic adult california giant salamander underwater at the bottom of a cold stream at night. Its skin is bumpy, perhaps a sign of trematode infection and despite its large size the gills are small as the cold flowing water is well oxygenated.

Night snorkeling in the redwoods to find an old friend. I posted that I was going to go look for this individual last week & I found the same one (I thiiink)! In the same deep pool I saw it in a year ago. A neotenic california giant salamander that never metamorphosed & never left the water. 🦎🌎

If everything goes according to plan tonight, I'll be spending some time in the water with this big fella - a neotenic california giant salamander. If I can't find him, hopefully some of his relatives will be in the waterways nearby. 🦎

My favorite recent image. Was going to hold onto it until it was published somewhere but changed my mind. This is a threatened CA tiger salamander laying eggs - my images were the 1st time this has been photographed in the wild, & this is my fav of the set. Notice the eggs near her chin!🌎🦎

A side view of a salamander fills the image from left to right. The tail is at the right, the body pointing to the left, but the front third of the sally curves back to the right, with the face angled towards the camera. The overall color of the sally is dark gray with an overlay of very tiny light gray dots. The limbs are the same color, along with streaky blotches of a coppery orange. The tail has the same background color, but also has many irregular blotches, whitish and with some coppery orange hues here and there. The effect makes the tail resemble a lichen-spotted branch. The eyes are large and bulging from the head, and are completely black.

Firschein's Salamander (Pseudoeurycea firscheini) from Veracruz state, Mexico. A male; the fleshy little nubbins at the snout's end are called cirri, and carry pheromones and other chemical signatures to the nostrils, in order to find females and locate rival males. #herps #NaturePhotography 🌿

They look like sliders and cooters, but chicken turtles are different altogether. This species specializes in disjunct seasonal ponds, and can spend MOST of the year out of water. Their thin shells allow them to travel on land more easily, but makes them vulnerable to predation. #turtles #wildlife
